Welcome to the forum, sending you hugs as if you are anything like me it will have come as a total shock. I am sure other people will be along soon to say hi soon. Do you know what your HbA1c blood results were on diagnosis and have you had a chance to talk to anyone at your GP surgery?

Hello and welcome,

How are you? I was frankly a mess when I was first diagnosed. The first thing I want to say- there is hope. I along with many many others here have changed our lives for the better following the diagnosis. It doesn't have to be the progressive illness many doctors assume it is. so there is real hope.

My first piece of advice is to have a quick look at the following link;

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/

My second piece of advice is that no matter what you were told by your doctor you are going to need a meter. If you don't have a meter you can't know whether what you are doing is working.

My third piece of advice is thread around here and ask questions. I dramatically reduced my carbs immediately and have had my blood sugar levels in the normal range ever since. It can take a while to reduce the levels but if you are on no mediation (except possibly metformin) you can reduce your carb intake and your levels will drop- but you don't have to take my word for it- test your levels.

Anyway- this is the best possible place for you to receive help, information and support so WELCOME.

Hiya. The first few days after diagnosis can be really confusing and worrying, especially if your local health professionals haven't told you much. Don't panic. It will get better, and there is a lot you can do personally to take charge of your own health and make big improvements. A positive attitude helps but can be hard to maintain. Lots of good information and support on this site and on some others (but not all!!).
