Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi.
My name is Jen and im a single mother of 3 children. My youngest, Caleb who is 3 years old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 16 months ago, up until 3 months ago i was injecting up to 5 times a day, he is now on medtronic insulin pump. I did try this forum nearly a year ago but dont think i was ready. I wud love to hear from any other parents as I dont have much of a support network. :D

Hi Jen and Caleb and welcome to the forum :)
Have a look at the Diabetes Youth Club section for advice on children and conversations with other Mothers.
Just to explain if people get you mixed up with someone else, there is another Mother and son couple with a very similar username to yours ! I'm sure you will meet them soon on the Youth Club Forum. Ask any questions you like and someone will be able to answer you.

Certainly got me confused, welcome to the forum Jen & Caleb! :)

Me too! but I believe the other mother and son members are Australian and her sons name is spelled with a 'K'. :)

Hi SophiaW,
Caleb has been on a medtronic pump now for nearly 3 months, how did you find the carb counting? how long did it take till everyone got used to the pump? caleb had a sensor put in on monday that makes his pump alarm when he gets high or low but have to switch it off during the night because it wakes him up. For over a year ive felt like I was totally on my own dealing with caleb diagnosis until I joined this forum now I know that im not and that there are more parents like me out there. Thank you for the welcome x :)

Never feel that you're alone, there is a lot of support here from other parents and like you say it's nice to know we're not alone. It can feel lonely sometimes as, in our family anyway, apart from hubby the rest of the family don't really understand what it's like caring for a type 1 child. I keep very upbeat and positive about it all so I guess they think there's nothing to it but as you know it can be very difficult and sometimes it just gets you down so it's nice to be able to log in here and read about other parents experiences or share frustrations with people who understand exactly what it's like. We're (parents of type 1 children) usually more active in the Youth's section of the forum or in the Type 1 forum so anything you want to ask post in there otherwise it might get overlooked here. I only noticed your post here because your name is similar to another member so it caught my eye :)

Caleb is still quite new to the pump so I expect you're still getting used to it and it can take a while to get everything settled so don't worry. Jess was set up on the pump and then over the next few months we tweaked and fine tuned everything. Even now we make adjustments regularly, I think with growing children there are always going to be ongoing changes needed to basal rates etc. Carb counting was okay for us but we'd been doing it for 2 years before going onto the pump so it wasn't anything new. If there's anything in particular you're finding difficult or not sure about just ask away :)
