Newbie and confused

Hi @zoebrown123 Welcome to the forum

It does all get alot easier in time, but there's alot of information to take in to start with - you're doing great already and knowing as much as you can will help hugely, knowledge is power with becoming an expert in managing your type 1. I recommend getting 'Think like a pancreas' written by a type 1 and full of useful information which is a good start. There's always someone around here to chat to as well, no question too silly and happy to help

Hey Zoe, welcome to the forum. You’ll meet plenty of pretty cool and like minded diabetics on here. We’re all in the same boat with the same aim so ask whatever you need, even if you need a moan or rant, get out in here and I’m sure someone will be able to help you out.

If I could roll back 18 years to my diagnosis I wish someone would of pointed me straight to dr Bernstein’s approach on how to manage and treat diabetes. 83 year old type one just like us from America. He’s also one of the best diabetes doctors we have ever had.

I only found his approach June last year and it has made my diabetes a lot easier to deal with and now I have almost normal blood sugars around the clock.

He has a channel on YouTube with some priceless info. After watching the first 20 odd on his channel I got his book off amazon the kindle one was like £6.99 maybe the best money I’ve spent on my diabetes full stop.

Hi Zoe, I was in contact with mine within a couple of weeks, but it was hard to maintain communication when I needed it as she was so busy so ended up leaving messages and waiting for call backs, my current nurse is brilliant, I can email her and get a response within a day or so, it's very much down to who you get and how busy they are, in time you will get put onto the DAFNE course, not immediately though as you may experience a 'honeymoon' phase with your pancreas where it will become less stressed with insulin therapy and pump out a bit of insulin which can last up to about a year. So DAFNE is really useful once you have more experience of your type 1 and is a good all rounder education course.

I was under the impression that I would be seeing a diabetic nurse ASAP as an urgant referral and have recently got an appointment for 10th April!!
I kind of feel like I’m a bit in the dark as this is all new with ‘carb counting’ and balancing out my bloods.
Does anyone have any advice in the easiest way to explain until I see a nurse? Or a good book to help?

Hello Zoe, great that you're on the forum. I was diagnosed 6 months ago and had the same reaction as you and was scared because I didn't know everything. It takes time but I've learnt more from this site and the great people than I have from the diabetic nurses. I'm sure you will too. I asked loads of questions and always got so much help, you will too....... just ask even if you think it's silly, it isn't. Heads up and blood glucose down.
