Hello everybody,
This is all new to me cause I was only diagnosed two weeks ago! So really I'm just a beginner.
I had a blood test for something that has nothing to do Diabetes then to my surprise I got a letter asking to speak to a doctor on the phone because of the Coronavirus so couldn't go to the docs.
Anyways I was told I had type 2! I was shocked, I told the doctor surely not as I feel just great!! but I had type 2 and that was that! I'm very border line so they have given me Metforman 500mg x 2 a day.
Now comes the task of just what I can and can't eat? Do I have to change my whole life, the way I live my life day to day? Do I have to give up the one pleasure I have up that being a rum & coke each evening?
I'm not in any way a food bin but I do love my grub so I can understand I'm going to have to discipline myself .....

Welcome to the forum.

First the good news, rum is absolutely fine, can you change to diet coke?

Hi @RoVic ,

We were all novices at this at some point you know, no shame in that. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html will give you some (very) basics on the condition, and on foods to eat and foods to avoid. But yeah, the coke'll have to be diet from here on in. A proper quality rum to go in it is fine though. (and for more alternatives: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/alcohol ). Anyway, the main thing is this: All carbs turn to glucose once ingested. So not just sugars, but starches too. That means no spuds, bread, pasta, rice, fruit, cereal, corn etc... But you can load up on meat, fish, poultry, above ground vegetables, and a host of other things mentioned in the first link I put in here. I don't usually eat breakfast anymore, just have one or two meals a day, but if you want breakfast, is eggs with bacon and cheese, maybe a tomato and/or high meat content sausages, truly a punishment? You're not going to have to go hungry. So no worries there.

You'll get the hang of this soon enough, you came to a good place to start.
Good luck,
Jo
