Hi to all - Newbie with some odd issues! After long delay It's been confirmed I'm type 2 and having fun. I aint happy with my support so far for DN and GP as they keep ignoring that I'm not just Diabetic but have complex disabilities that affect my hands and dexterity a lot. Arthritis, carpel tunnel and now neuropathy is getting to be quite fun, in a highly ironic set of ways.

Cos of mobility loss and care cuts, I can't get to the GP Surgery and they can't grasp that Reasonable Adjustment means more than barking down the phone for 5 minutes rather than providing the 30 minute face to face appointments that able bodied and mobile patient get at the surgery! Since being diagnosed I've seen a GP once and never had the courtesy of a face to face meeting with the DN. When asking about possible treatment options they are so controlling they just cut the call off, send a prescription and then get miffed when you have to point out they have sent the wrong drug. My mental health is already fragile due to chronic pain and more, and when you are asked how you are doing and you respond "It's Hell", being told in response with a most condescending tone "Oh That's terrible, but what's your BG?", is not helpful. When you ask them to stop with the demeaning and dismissive tone and moderate their language, your told they have done nothing wrong and they dismiss what you have said. It's rather insulting and even Bullying/Abusive/Unprofessional.

It's maddening when they keep demanding that you supply a urine sample, and you have to ask are they extracting the urine when for the 60th time you ask how you are supposed to get it to the surgery when there is no one to deliver it - You apologize profusely, but you lack Telekinetic powers and so can't make it levitate down the High St for their amusement. I'm then told that a district nurse will arrange to collect it, and months later I'm tired of looking at the amber pot on my desk awaiting collection. Then DN phones up to tell me I'm a naughty child for not making sure that someone has dipped a stick in my pee! They seem to believe that it's unreasonable for me to ask for such "Abuse" to stop and that I wish to deal with a more professional DN. I've been told that any breakdown in co-operation/Communication is my fault and that any failures by her - such as sending the wrong drugs - are cause by me! Again they seem to believe I can control her hands at a distance and svengali like make her input the wrong data into computers.

They seem to have zero knowledge of NICE Guidance or supposed basic national standards in care, data protection and even basic humanity. They certainly have zero capacity to grasp Equality or Duties.

Example - was given Nexus Gluco RX and told to get on with it. Then when having to ask for re prescription of strips I'm criticised for using too many strips. Issue is not over testing, just coordination and bad eyes and getting blood on the back of the strip which shorts it out. It's proving very hard to get my BG down to a workable level - it was averaging 28 at diagnosis - and now I' able to get it to 7.5 to 11.5. Being Told that I'm wasting resources when I'm asking si there a system thats better designed for the Less dextrous is past frustrating.

I am bemused that The GP apparently has only ever seen a data dump from a monitor once - when I did it as he was coming to see me. He was amazed that graphs were generated, trends could be seen and issues spotted ( such as a massive BG spike caused by infection). The DN has apparently never seen this miracle of IT either and can't manage to accept the data dump as a pdf sent by E-Myther. They also lack the capacity to use a URL linked to dropbox to look at basics in any web browser anywhere on the planet. Then having the DN barking at me down the phone that she wants all my Pre Breakfast and only pre breakfast test results quoted to her over the phone and me attempting to meet her demands .... she's angry that I'm not able to do as she demands Instantly. I've asked to be told in advance of any call that they are to occur so that I can have necessary data available, and yet DN phones when she wants, and even moans when I explain that I have to go and turn something off in the kitchen so as to be able to speak to her and not Flambe The Whole House.

It's surprising how ill informed supposed professionals are on how things can go wrong. It seems odd that supposed intelligence professionals have even told me that as I have a large computer monitor (27 inch - deal with reduced vision) I should have no issue with motor coordination. This non sequitur has no logic, but is seems they are impressed by big numbers, even if they are mindless. I did check that they understood and had heard that it was "Motor Co-ordination" and not "Monitor Co-ordination" that I was referring to

I'm not sure which cyber reality they inhabit, but I'm fast reaching the point that it was some kind of X-Box shoot um up, where I could address my growing frustration by blasting them with a re-eduction mortar with kiloton yields. I've even had to mention that Disability Discrimination Legislation has been in place for 20 years, so could they possibly anticipate any adjustments that may be needed? The response: We Fully Comply with all obligations. I wonder if the gate posts at the surgery would benefit from a hearing test. :banghead:

Simple steps, such as access to OT and or Dietician, seems to be past the ability of both DN and GP to grasp. As with all things disability, I'm having to suit up with my armoury to have to fight back against the ignorance that disables. I always have a full armory and full range of weapons from side arms to Thermonuclear before I place folks on formal notice of hostilities. If anyone has any tips on where I may get my hands on a Heat Ray or Disacombobulator, I can transact funds to your Grand Cayman accounts on the fly.

Any ideas on, Reduced hand function and dexterity restricts food prep and as so many easily accessed food are carb rich I'm looking for alternatives. I'm having to feed myself with Pitta Breads - Frozen to Microwave, split and fill with bagged salads, cooked meats etc ... but I'm stumped for a low/non carb alternative.

More crip friendly test kit recommendations very welcome. Any with wireless or Bluetooth? so I don't have to scream when I can't get the micro USB shoved where the sun.....you get the idea. Kit that is more tolerant of missing the spot and has test strips that don't short out. Whilst so much is written about convenience, writing from the crip point of view is not the forte of marketing people and corporate executives.

Cheers

I was looking at a "mobile" monitor in a high street chemist recently which said it didn't need separate strips. Looked quite expensive at the side of the one I use but it could be worth looking at given your dexterity problems.

Diet wise if you are following low carb but need convenience salad is good and cooked meats also. Pitta bread might not be the best option but see what your meter shows you. If you like cheese you could try different types rather than bread, or crispbreads are relatively low carbs which are good with cream cheese, peanut butter or whatever toppings you like.

Frozen or pre-prepared veg is also pretty convenient. Frozen also pretty economical and doesn't tend to go to waste. Frozen berries similarly might be an option and nice with Greek yogurt.

Can't help much with meat options as I am a veggie so I tend to buy alternatives.

Bulk cooking could also help and freeze portions so there is less to do day to day and you have back ups for really bad days.

Hope things pick up for you soon

Welcome Glass,
sorry to hear of the way you've been treated.
It sounds as if you've made progress with your BGs.
Pitta breads seem to be one of the better bread options - you could try multigrain and see how that affects you by comparison.
I don't know enough of other meters to advise you there.
