I found out by accident a year ago that I was diabetic,I had gout ? had full blood test done, came back low on uric acid, high on blood suger 12.2 ,crippling leg mussel /foot cramps (limped 5 months).
Went for eye tests--found out eyesight perm. damaged.Appeared to have it under control by diet alone,Stopped smoking (40 aday) Aug 8th 2012 on Champix tablets. Had side effects with tablets, sick for 2 hours every morning
taste buds recovered--pigged out put 10 pounds on. Sugar levels went up.
Tested in Nov2012 put on metformin 2 X 250mg. retested last month 12.2 ,now on 2x500 mg,bought a meter, then given a meter on nhs  Been testing now for 4 days 4/5 times a day, cannot get reading below 8.5 Middle of the night,--in day time with No food I,m still around10/11, a drink or a sandwich puts me over 12.
Need advice,am I not giving the metformin time to work? Could I be a type 1?

Hi there, I originally managed on diet alone then a nasty life experience shot my anxiety and bloods right up and I went on to 4 x metformin and 1 x Januvia. Despite losing 40lbs on a low fat/moderate carb diet I still couldn't get my bloods below the 7-8 mark.

I did some more research and since the new year I've been 'low carb - high fat'ing and its worked for me BUT it did take a few weeks for my bloods to start significantly dropping. I think we often assume that because its what we eat we should see 'instant' results, which is not always the case.

I'm now on 5-6 numbers and as of last week on half the amount of metformin! It takes time, so please keep doing the right things for your body and hopefully results will slowly but surely follow.
