Hi all, new to the forum. Diagnosed in April 2020 after several weeks of headaches that never seemed to go away. Managed to get a f2f with my gp even though we were in lockdown at the time, & was sent straight to hospital. My A1c was 110, my bs was 26.9 & my keytones were 2. Put on a drip & given a shot of insulin, had a chest X-ray & was connected to a heart monitor. My weight was 49kg (around 7st 10lbs which was my normal weight). I was under constant observation all day, in fact I was a bit overwhelmed by all the attention because I felt fine, the staff were brilliant. Discharged after 8 hours when my Keytones were 1, & started on liquid Metformin 5 mls twice a day. 3 days later my gp rang to see how I was & I was stunned when he told me I was very poorly in the hospital.
i responded well to the Metformin, by June my A1c was 60, by September it was 50 & In May 2021 it was 49. Happy days.
In September 2020 I had a double whammy & was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica after 2.5 months of the most debilitating pain & put on steroids (Prednisolone) 20mg a day, which sent my bs into double figures. The steroids were reduced & Metformin increased to 10mls twice a day which I’m still on.
I’m sorry for the long post but the bad news keeps coming. In July 2021, after an endoscopy & 2 colonoscopies because I was losing a lot of weight, I had major bowel surgery because they found 2 inverted lesions in the 1st colonoscopy & could only remove 1 in the 2nd, so there was a suspicion of cancer. I was lucky it was on the right side so didn’t need to have a bag. My blood sugars were very unstable after the op, ranging from 2 to 20. Was given Gliclazide 40mg once a day & had a few insulin shots as well. Discharged after 5 days & bs evened out again.
By April this year they began to rise a little & by June they were in double figures again, even the fasting ones. Gliclazide was doubled & kept doubling until now I’m on 160mgs twice a day. Still no improvement in my readings, I had to go to A&E twice over the bank holiday weekend with bs 29.6 & 22.7. Put on drips & kept overnight both times. No insulin given as my Keytones were 0.5 so not in Ketoacidosis.
I’ve been seeing my diabetes nurse for 3 weeks now, my weight is now 35kgs, & I’ll be starting insulin on Monday. It’s a small dose, 6 units & once a day. I can’t even bear to prick my fingers but I’m gonna have to do this.
So sorry again for the long post, by the way I’m 72 years old & hardly ever needed to see a doctor until I reached 70, so unfair .

That's a lot to gave gone through in a relatively short period of time.
Although you've mentioned various medications, you don't mention food.
What's a typical food day for you?
