I've been a member of Diabetes UK since elder son was diagnosed with Type 1 aged 24 (8 years ago). We found the magazine and information really helpful, and he's doing fine. We were all very shaken initially, but his wife quickly decided that if this was how life was going to be, they'd better accept it and get on with it, and enjoy life to the full regardless, and they have been doing so ever since.
At the end of last week, younger son (aged 32) was diagnosed with Type 1 after reporting to A&E and being admitted on a drip until he rehydrated and ketone and sugar levels settled down. It was a bit less of a shock this time, and having lived with diabetes he has a better idea of what he is in for than his brother did at first. They are different characters and I imagine he will find it easier to follow the rules.
I'll be posting from time to time, initially discussing the genetics of diabetes. So, hallo to everyone, looking forward to meeting up online.
