Hi all.

I'm a newbie to this forum. I was sent this way because I was keen to hitch up with a like minded person who is interested in a buddy to do the fast diet (Michael Mosley's 5:2 diet).

I am a pumper. I am Type 1. Have been diabetic since I was 8 yrs old. I am now 53 yrs old so I guess at some stage I will be doing the meopause thing but so far have had no issues. I am carrying 15 kg more than I'd like. I am a shortie.

I am tending towards lo carbing but have to admit that I am a frequent delinquent and will overindulge in not so ideal food. I am also tending towards 'real food' but have a long way to go before I'm there. The process is slow - I've cut out a swag of processed foods but the pantry does still have some processed foods in and you have to admit they are very, very handy at times.

I am hypothyroid and am in the midst of experimenting a bit here with meds. Recently transitioned from synthetic thyroxin to Armour (piggy thyroid) and Lugol drops. I did start out with the 5:2 diet for a week or so but got a bit discouraged by (1) 'wasting' my fast by treating hypo's and (2) not getting consistent and rapid weight los (you know, the magic pill concept).

With regard to (1), I am hoping to get a new pump in the next week or so that has smaller basal increments. Hopefully I can then fine tune to eliminate a few hypo's. I rarely bolus as I don't do the carby meals. But I do correct a fair bit because I do do carby type unscheduled aberrations. Those corrections aside, I get through about 9-10 units as a TDD.

With regard to (2), I'm hoping once the thyroid tests start looking better (ie: within normal parameters!) the weight loss may become a bit less arduous. The couple of days I have been successful in fasting were not a hardship at all. But I can see that there is no doubt that planning is a key element. If you don't plan, it is way too easy to reach out for an unplanned snack in a bored/stressed/happy/sad/ absolutely any moments and those snacks seem to be carb based. They impact on the blood sugars which has a domino effect on the hunger levels and the motivation levels.

My glucose control is not flash. Last HbA1C was 52. It's been worse. It's been better. Somehow, despite my best intentions, life gets in the way and the diabetes takes a back seat.

If there's anybody out there that can relate to anything in my post and would like a buddy for mutual support, I'd love to hear from you. Especially interested in those who might be interested in embarking on a 5:2 journey for the sake of improved health with weight loss as a pleasant side effect.

I have the 5:2 book - I only bought it as it has some great recipes in which are low carb and needed some inspiration.

I didnt set out to lose weight I was more interested in keeping a steady regular BG control, so I have taken the low carb route and I only eat around 40g of carb a day.

My breakfast consists of a flaxseed muffin with beaten egg and baking powder in the microwave for 1 minute and eaten with a slice of cheese, salad with rollmop herrings for lunch and protein meal for supper with a few potatoes not to everyone's taste but that's why i got the 5:2 book for ideas.

I don't have carb cravings anymore - I used to almost binge eat carbs to the dismay of my BG and this also affected my moods as was yo-yo-ing up and down all the time, I have also lost about 8lbs - to be honest wasn't bothered too much about losing the weight but am more alert, control is alot better and don't have so many issues with my moods going up and down.
