Hi,

Apologizes for the long text. I feel I can talk my heart out in this forum.

I am 40, Male and was diagnosed with Type 2 on 28th Aug 2013. My A1C was 11.8, Fasting Sugar as 23.3 and Post 32.5. I was immediately put on Metformin 500mg (twice a day) and Insulin 7unit (night).

It was shocking, embarrassing (for the way some of close people reacted) and depressing (I love cooking and have lived to eat !!). I was over weight by 6 kgs (mostly around waist), eating out – 2 to 3 times/month (no pizza/burger)– keeping 6 yr old son away from junk food, Alcohol – 1 to 2 times a month, preferably vegetarian, no one in close family is diabetic …. I didn’t see any reason why I should I be a DIABETIC! Instead of realizing and accepting, I still feel that I will get over it one day. I have not started walking with it yet.

I have lost 4 Kgs (2 inches from waist) in last 45 days, have controlled diet, walking 6Km per day and on Janumet 50/1000 for last 2+ months (from the time Insulin was stopped). A1C test done on 25th Nov, has given number 6.4.

I do have lot of questions to help live better. Let me start with some of them

Being an Indian, Grains (wheat, Rice) are staple food. Even though I have reduce the intake to half of what I used to, can I continue with these carbs? I have not been eating Rice in last 3 months.

My Fasting level remains at 5.8, with all the changes I tried from my side. Any tips to bring it below 5.8? BTW, my numbers before going to bed are ~6.4 most of the times

After 1 hour of a meal, my sugar levels are ~9.5 and ~6.7 after 2 hours of meal. Is this OK? I heard less than 7.5 after 2 hours of any meal is something to maintain. But I do see high values after one hour of meal do impacting my A1C. Should I cut on carbs? Or Am I doing fine?

Can I have Protein supplements? With the reduced weight, my arms and legs look very weak. So I was advised to do some muscle building. But with current calories intake, I feel it will be too much to do weight lifting. Any recommendation on Protein supplements?

I have more questions which I will continue asking

Thanks!

Hi. You seem to be doing the right things. Yes, an Indian diet may make it difficult to control the amount of carbs but all I can say is try to have the lower-GI ones and try to balance them with veg and protein. Don't worry too much about fasting blood levels as these can be affected by the overnight live dump of glucose. The 2hrs after a meal reading has more meaning. You are using USA units for blood sugar, but staying under 140 is about right. You blood sugar levels don't appear too bad but just keep the carbs sensible. I can't comment on protein drink but just check it isn't also loaded with sugar.

Hi,you have same case with my mother she was also diagnosed of diabetes
type 2, we almost sold our properties for her medicine and other maintenance
for her high-blood pressure also. And there was one time one of my friend is selling
a supplement he told that the supplement is very for diseases not for diabetes, I
didn't believe him but he told he will give me two boxes of it and he said dont pay me
if it is not effective. After i told my mom to take it 2 caps, 30 min before meals,
but first day of taking the supplement he suffer from headache, and then i ask my friend why
like that then he link me to their company doctor. the doctor told me that the body of my
mom is just adjusting. After talking the supplement for 2 week my mom told that her sugar
was became normal until now she used it including all member of the family.
