Hi All

I have only just joined and I hope to speak with many of you for guidance, help & support and I will give back as much as I can.

50 and overweight, have been for ages now. Like many have tried to lose, but failed. I'm now 16st & 5lbs. Just been to see the nurse all she could say that it is difficult.

I'm just wondering, What does work?

Help would be great. I also have an under active tyroid and heart conditions, although I walk around 2.5 miles each day.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Kevin

Welcome.

My daughter is Type 1 and also has under active thyroid. Your nurse is right is is difficult. Tying to make a difference is a good start, so is the walking. We try to walk every morning for 20mins before school but its hard to get and out of house by 8:10 to fit in.

Can't be of much help other than to say welcome. Someone on this site will be able to help. They always do.

Good Luck.

Hi Kevin, welcome to the forum.First off sit down and look at your lifestyle.Next cut out the sugars!biscuits, sweet things, beer etc. Then comes the portion sizes, look at your next plate of food then cut down the size of the portions.Cut down the amount of carbohydrates you eat ,that means bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, the complex carbs.Exercise, you walk 2.5 miles a day, that great keep it up.I lost 2stone and I'm the laziest B on Earth by doing this,so it can be done. You have to be strong willed ,but after a week or two you will find yourself thriving on it and your blood sugars will probably drop as well.Do you have a blood testing kit? Test first thing in the morning and 2 hours after eating to see what affects your blood sugar levels. We are all different so I'm afraid no one can give you a definite diet to follow,it's all trail and error.Good luck with this,we're here to support you and keep asking questions.

Kevin welcome to the site, Im just a tad older than you and a little bit heavier but at 6`4 being over weight does tell, I dont have any knowledge of Thyroid problems so cant advise there but As Sue states Work on the will power and reduce as much as you can carbohydrate consumption, ( Youll see loads of pointers on here) I have managed 16lbs since end of April. It sometimes goes in fits n starts but persevere it is literally a case of will power and the desire to get your life back !

In any event do keep asking questions on here because a lot of us started with a need to lose weight and get a bit of control.

The best of luck to you
