So I have been thinking about it for a while, and the window of opportunity opened so I have dived in and am going to try my best at my first attempt of the Newcastle diet. I intend to use shakes and supplement the three meals with the prescribed green veg.
I started this morning and had one shake for lunch. Not brilliant compared to a nice bit of salmon and veg but hey ho.
The shake has 18gs of carbs in it - which is pretty much my daily limit for the last three months. So a bit of a spike, higher than I like, 5 - 7.3 in about 45mins then a slow down to 6.2 after two hours.
I am using the Tesco shakes because whilst I could get the ones used in the ND study off of amazon, they had limited supply. The Tesco ones correlate almost exactly carbs/fat/protein to the ones used so ideal.
I have to say I am the least confident, though very motivated, I have ever been mainly due to the complexities of a job with a bit of international travel which is going to make the next 8 weeks complex.
I will post updates here including weight on a Saturday which is when I weigh myself. Only have between 1 & 2 stone to lose though I would like to get my body fat percent below 18 if I could and visceral fat below 8.
Wish me luck!
Hi @Fleegle,
How's your Newcastle diet going?
Are you feeling hungry at all? How is your body dealing with all these carbs?
Looking forward to an update.
Hi @Fleegle,
Some interesting observations.
I don't really believe your results are as bad as you think. First, even if your blood sugars go up more than usual, they come down quite quickly -- meaning your insulin kicks in. Second, you are only four days in after being on a low carb diet -- I would give it a little longer to get your body get used to the carbs again. (Easy for me to say, though -- given that I panicked last week after seeing fasting and average blood sugars rise to over 5.6).
Did you have a shake before going on your bike ride? Or was it on an empty tummy? When you are exercising your muscles burn glucose. If you don't have enough glucose in your system, your liver will provide the glucose needed, thus the rise. If you have a shake before, your muscles will use the glucose in the shake.
I imagine that vegetables without butter or some kind of sauce or dressing can get quite boring. Have you thought about having your vegetables in a soup maybe with some bouillon?
