Hey guys, I'm 28 and from Northern Ireland. Was brought into hopsital with chest pains after playing American Football and turned out I had a blood clot in my heart (officially a heart attack) and when I was in hospital and recovering they found out I was diabetic. Sort of new it would happen someday as I am over weight and there is some history in my family of it too.

My first blood level check was 18.1 in hospital which sent the alarm bells - my HBA1C came through at over 100! I have not been diagnosed with my type yet but they have put me on small dosage of insulin 4 times a day in the mean time. My meeting with the consultant isnt until next month so should find out then.

All abit over whelming for the family and myself but using it as a positive way to change my life around. I have lost around 2 stone so far in the passed 8 weeks so the weight is coming down and my sugar levels have generally been below 7 since I have been trying to change my eating habits. The odd wee jump up to 10 but that is only when I know I have eaten something I shouldn't have. My levels are actually highest in the morning before eating which is odd I think so they have upped my dose of night time insulin.

The problem I am finding is getting my head around the balancing out of foods and trying to find different things to eat....there are a list of meals we know are good and find ourselves rotating these. We are trying to approach it by cutting out all processed foods and cooking from fresh more often that not. Also with the Heart problems before I have to stop playing American Football (not allowed contact sports) and have to slowly build up my exercise. Looking forward to trawling around the forum for some info and suggestions.

Hi glad you have been doing all the right things and getting the right results... There is a book which had been our life saver , called carbs and cals. I imagine your carb counting ? It covers almost all foods . Good luck !!

Thanks, will definatley give that a look. Havent really been carb counting in particular but I suppose I should be?
One problem I had was that we didnt know what a high carb/sugar count was.....trying to educate myself abit so I know for future. The first few weeks shopping was tough going!

Hi , I have no understanding of type 2 but type 1 , generally count carb , your team normally put you on a carb ratio to insulin , so if your ratio was 10 to 1 that would be for every 10 carbs of food you would have 1 insulin dose .. Etc ... How do you manage at the moment with insulin ratios ?

This is the first I've heard of that personally, probably as they haven't actually diagnosed me as Type 1 but putting me on low dose of Insulin for the time being.
I have been put on doses of 4mml of Novorapid before each meal (3 times a day) and 6mml of Lantus before bed - I personally think I will be Type 2 as I am overweight and expect that to be the case - think I am only on this to try and keep sugar levels down until I get my proper diagnosis.

Type 2's on this forum especially those on the drug Metformin or controlling blood glucose level by diet generally try to cut carbs to an absolute minimum, this runs against official NHS dietary advice which seems based on a good diet for no-diabetics but large numbers of type 2's find it makes a huge difference in their blood glucose readings.

I cannot speak from experience for Type 1 or those Type 2's who take insulin or other types of medication.

Well what ever your diagnosis you are on the right track 2 stone weight loss is amazing well done ! You should be so proud !! Type 1 is based on ratios but I won't blow your mind with that ! It sounds like your having top up insulin so your pancreas is still producing insulin , this does happen with type 1 but only for a honeymoon period . Stay focused and work with your team , your attitude to your diagnosis is excellent , try to eat a varied diet and low gi food is excellent , burgen bread , brown rice , new potatoes the list is long ... All fish meat egg are carb free , but ask lots of questions from your medical team and good luck ... Sorry low gi food keeps blood levels more stable , good luck !!
