Hey guys, I'm 28 and from Northern Ireland. Was brought into hopsital with chest pains after playing American Football and turned out I had a blood clot in my heart (officially a heart attack) and when I was in hospital and recovering they found out I was diabetic. Sort of new it would happen someday as I am over weight and there is some history in my family of it too.
My first blood level check was 18.1 in hospital which sent the alarm bells - my HBA1C came through at over 100! I have not been diagnosed with my type yet but they have put me on small dosage of insulin 4 times a day in the mean time. My meeting with the consultant isnt until next month so should find out then.
All abit over whelming for the family and myself but using it as a positive way to change my life around. I have lost around 2 stone so far in the passed 8 weeks so the weight is coming down and my sugar levels have generally been below 7 since I have been trying to change my eating habits. The odd wee jump up to 10 but that is only when I know I have eaten something I shouldn't have. My levels are actually highest in the morning before eating which is odd I think so they have upped my dose of night time insulin.
The problem I am finding is getting my head around the balancing out of foods and trying to find different things to eat....there are a list of meals we know are good and find ourselves rotating these. We are trying to approach it by cutting out all processed foods and cooking from fresh more often that not. Also with the Heart problems before I have to stop playing American Football (not allowed contact sports) and have to slowly build up my exercise. Looking forward to trawling around the forum for some info and suggestions.
