Hello all. Newly diagnosed type 1 on second of January this year (aged 36).
Decided to finally get tested after a few months of different symptoms (weight loss, extreme thirst etc) and on the morning of my appointment I woke with a massive abscess, (larger than my hand), on my right buttock (please keep laughing to a minimum). The nurse took a blood sample, had a quick look at the abscess then called the doctor in. The second he walked in the door he said he could smell pear drops, did a quick ketone test before calling the hospital and informing me I was in DKA and seriously ill! Within the hour I was in hospital with three drips going and emergency surgery followed at midnight. 3 days on a sliding scale and a weeks stay in hospital followed. It was quite a shock and certainly wasn't what I had planned for the new year!
In hospital I was seen three times by the diabetic nurse (who was very supportive given the limited time she could spend with me) who showed me how to test and how to take my injections, and the only time I saw the diabetic doctor was during rounds on the morning. Unfortunately the doctors explain what was happening, why, or what to expect in the future. Also after being discharged I had no contact from any of the diabetic specialists for over three weeks and then only had contact due to me calling them because of experiencing neuropathy type symptoms in my hands and some small blisters on my arms.
I've had a bit of spare time on my hands, due to being laid up because of the surgery, so have spent a lot of time on here reading up on things. This forum and the website really has been an invaluable source of information so thank you to all involved, oh and well done if you managed to get through all this in one go
