Newly diagnosed Hba1C rising still

Hi

After a virus (cold/flu like plus skin rash!) and being completely 'shot to pieces' a non fasting blood test gave 12.4 2hours after porridge (milk with raisins) weight 13 st 2lb.

Cut sugar out and sugary things immediately (not that I had that much anyway but was sooo hungry all the time!) Lost half a stone in 10 days. Week and a half later fasting blood results 7.3 Hba1c 48.

17 days later Hba1c reading 49. Weight loss slowed down.
Haven't increased carbs, have added some exercise in put could do a lot more.

Do I need to be concerned that reading is rising? Struggling with concentration and having a terrible impact at work.

Please comment/help!!

Thanks

you need to be worried as all 3 measures show signs of diabetes but only just. What has your doctor said to you

Well, it's far from ideal the movement is upwards, but any shift of 1 would usually be considered insignificant. For all you know your earlier 48 could have been "rounded down" and the more recent 49 rounded up, if you understand what I mean?

Whilst I completely believe you have cut out the sugary stuff, the hard reality is our bloods are impacted by the wider carbohydrate food group. So, bread, potatoes, rice and pasta for examples can also push our blood scores up when we eat them, and it could also be you're eating a bit more of those to make up for the sugary things you say you've forsaken?

Have a read around the forum, and consider reducing your carb intake as much as you feel comfortable with - topping up your plate with extra vegetables. If you get really hungry, the a bit of extra fat soon seems to sort that out.

Hi OP
Welcome to the forum. Senior members will respond to your post and you will get help. However, I would suggest that you provide more info such as your age, gender, height and any other info that is needed to look into health issues. HbA1c is an averaging test and is different from other tests.

Did you visit a doctor?

Hi

thanks for your reply (and to everyone else who replied).

Just seen diabetes nurse today who confirmed diagnosed as type 2 diabetic given readings within treatment range. Will be using diet and exercise rather than tablets as only just over treatment line and would rather try that to begin with.

I am 44, female and now weigh 12st 6lb (quite a bit of muscle - at my fittest, in my 20's, when swimming and walking every day weighed 11st 2lb - I guess 11.5st my goal now, so a stone to lose). Previous history of hyperthyroidism so LADA a possibility.

Diet has helped so far, as brain/thinking feel a lot clearer though foggy at times and skin healing up where as before it wasn't. Am hoping this starts to reflect in the blood results!

Nurse says I am not really the standard type 2 as I feel lows when I need to eat (though probably not that low really) and highs/headaches when have had too much carbs/any sugar. Mentioned LADA to nurse due to thyroid history but told treatment the same. Being reviewed in a few months.

Dietician appointment, then reviewed in a few months.

your current body weight 12st 6lb = 174 lbs. 44years is too young, so good news is you can quickly/ easily effectively control T2D and can completely get out of it through clean diet and regular exercises.

You did not provide info on your height, so it is not really possible to comment/ suggest anything. Let us say if you are 6 footer, this is perfectly healthy weight as your current BMI is 23.6 However, if your height is 5' 6inches, then your BMI is 28.1 which you need to take corrective action asap to bring it down.

However BMI is a very vague, first line of measurement and target. The more accurate ones (w.r.t. fat) are body fat measurement and fat location on the body. Any cheap electronic bathroom scale will give your Body Fat measurement.

Since there is a positive dx for T2D, you should get rid of at least 5% of your current body weight in the short term; and another 5% in the long term - and be able to maintain that new avatar - this is the normal recommendation. 1lb weight loss per week is ideal, though you can target up to 2lbs per week.

If you work on weight reduction, body fat will also be slowly reduced. If you have more fat around your waist [visceral fat], then it is in fact easy to get rid of it faster. I have noted that you were active in the past with swimming etc, so it will be quite easy for you to get into shape and take full control on your body.

If I am in your position; I would get these - a pedometer [such as garmin vivofit] to monitor all movements/ sedentary levels/ sleep quality etc, a heart rate monitor [to check heart rate while exercising], a glucometer [to 'eat to the meter'], sign up for 'myfitnesspal' to measure/ know daily calories of what is eaten.

I also feel the lows and the highs. For me when I hit high 8s I get dry itchy eyes and when I go under 4 I get this stinging feeling in my feet and palms of my hands. Interestingly I can estimate my BG levels fairly accurately by the distance the warmth (or cold) starts from my finger tips. Anything from cold up to my elbow (3.8) to all fingers warm and that is above 6.

Early days of LADA whilst you are in the honeymoon period is much like T2 as your nurse says but you will get progressively worse until you are T1. It seems (anecdotally) that this can be extended by eating low carb as it reduces the strain on the existing cells.
