Hello all. Two weeks ago my doctor told me that the results of a GTT blood test were 14.1 two hours after taking a glucose drink. He explained that means I have T2 diabetes.

Please would any of the members tell me if a GTT test of 14.1 is "minor" diabetes. Also, I have attended my first diabetes meeting regarding the steps in its management, and the nurse gave me some strips on which to check my urine once per day. In the morning the readings on the strips are almost always negative(yellow), but in the afternoon or evening the readings go all the way to the other end of the scale (dark green), sometimes showing a reading of >=255(black). Do you think this is to be expected, and nothing to worry about until my next meeting at the clinic on January 8th?

Thanks

Hi and welcome. Yes, it's likely you have diabetes but the best test is the Hba1C which the clinic may give you. Urine strips are a very crude measure and I would take the step of buying a glucose meter and strips and test 2 hours after a meal every so often. The SD Codefree meter online is good value. You now need to control the carbs in your diet as these are converted to glucose in the stomach. Are you overweight?

Thanks Daibell. My Hba1C was 49 (6.6%). And yes, I am carrying some weight now with a BMI of 33. I know I must lose weight.

That figure of 6.6% isn't too bad. Yes, go low-carb to get both weight and blood sugar down. Normally the GP will prescribe Metformin to help reduce the insulin resistance you probably have.

@PJUK
With urine test strips you are dealing with a very old technology as glucose will not get into your urine until your blood glucose reaches a certain level, usually around 10mmol/l and the value in your urine will be due to the accumulated glucose since you last emptied your bladder!.
I would consider self - funding some blood glucose testing (SD Codefree are the cheapest at ~ £7/50 strips) but you need to buy the meter at ~£11 which would be cheaper than most other strips at at least £15 / 50 with a "free" meter

Hi,

You've already been given some great advice, I don't know enough about T2 to comment, but I just wanted to say welcome to the forum!!
