Newly diagnosed - Metformin

Hi all ,

I've recently been diagnosed with T2 and started off on Metformin. I'm on my first week of 1 a day and will progress over the next month I till I see the diabetic nurse again.
I was wondering if anyone had any problems with theses tablets. I get very bad diarrhoea and stomach ache after an hour of taking them. However in the morning when I wake up, I also have a really bad headache and feel genuinely rubbish. Should I stop taking these tablets ? I felt much better before I was diagnosed. I have also been working on a low carb diet for the past few days and stopped drinking Coca Cola. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I had problem with Metformin initially but after a little while taking it, it got better. Reduce the dosage for couple of days and then reintroduce it. I find that helps and you will soon be okay with it. The body just have to get used to the medication.

Hi. Standard Metformin is known to create bowel problems. These often clear after a week or two but if not do ask the nurse to change you to the SR (Slow Release) version
 
Due to my ibs I have the mr metformin and have only had 2 bouts of diarrhoea in the two weeks I've been taking it (I also take loperamide and mebeverine daily otherwise I would be unable to leave the house let alone the bathroom) so for me that is pretty good, might be worth speaking to diabetic nurse and say your struggling with side effects so would prefer mr version
 
I was diagnosed with type 2 about 4 months ago and I'm on two 1000mg metformin twice per day.Your body will get used to them after a few weeks and you won't know your taking them.I'm going to start a vigourous exercise programme and cut the metformin down as I think they make me lose weight.If you're just recently diagnosed don't despair if you feel awful and you have blurry vision,etc,as for me it took about 6 weeks before it all started to change for the better.Although your blood sugar will get better quickly I think your blood haemoglobin takes a bit longer to settle so don't worry it gets better.
 
Ooops.I mean 1000mg metformin slow release twice per day
