Newly diagnosed now also coeliac - what to eat?

hopeful

Newbie
Well hot on our son being diagnosed type 1 diabetic he is also now confirmed to have coeliac disease. This means no wheat, oats or barley. In very simple terms this means that all his traditional carbs have been wiped off the ok to eat list.

No longer willl he be able to fill up on bran flakes, weetabix or porridge and his bread will need to be gluten free as will his pasta.

This is an additional concern we could rather do without.

Is there anybody in a similar position and do they have any food suggestions, particularly for breakfast.

Cheers all

Hi again hopeful,

Your poor son really does seem to be going through the mill at the moment (no pun intended). However, this link might help you to sort out some breakfast foods. I see they include a gluten-free porridge.

One benefit (if you can call it that) of being coeliac is that he will be forbidden all the high-carbohydrate foods that would have otherwise increased blood sugar. Because the alternatives are low carb you will need to be careful with his medication.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the response, I'll look at the link you sent. Perhaps we don't know something or haven't been told, but I'm unclear why it is good he can't have high carbs as we have been told he must have carbs every meal for his insulin to work. Hopefully all will be clear when we meet his nutritionist again.
