Hi there,

I'm a newly diagnosed T1 diabetic. 22M. I had originally thought I was Type 2, and that was the working diagnosis given my BMI is in the late end of the Overweight stage. My islet cell antibody results came back this morning, and they were positive. Just waiting for an appointment with the endos now!

I've been on a low-carbohydrate diet, on average < 25g a day. Fasting blood sugar on average 4.4 mmol/L which I'm quite happy with. I've had great support from my GP who has been checking up on me weekly and providing me with glucose and ketone test strips whilst I wait for the antibody tests.

Not taking any medication yet. The endo was asking the GP to push Metformin to me when I was first given the diagnosis of Diabetes (not knowing which type yet), but I insisted on trying out low-carb. It's worked wonders, and my HbA1c has gone from 93 to 60 in less than 1 month. However, the endo is now concerned about keto as I am now a confirmed Type 1.

Had a visit to the opticians and also the podiatrist checked the pulse in my foot + sensitivity. All perfect. I'm very glad to have caught this beast of a disease before any severe complications.

Been lurking on the site for a good month without an account, what a great resource/community this is.

Just be aware you won't permanently be insulin free so worth getting your head around that now, at the moment you'll be in the honeymoon but it will end and as a Type 1 you will need insulin just to survive xx

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. What took you so long to post..

Well? Technically.. Once prescribed insulin you should be able to dose accordingly for what you eat..
Easier said than done. However, If low carb or keto works for you.? It's not going to be an issue..

I guess I was waiting for confirmation as to whether or not it's T1DM or T2DM before making an account. Why? I have no idea :banghead:

Thanks for the warm welcomes everybody :)

Glad to have you onboard.

Either way with the diagnosis. Find what works for you from there.. So far... If you're able to do so? Use the meter & work with what you know.
