Hello all

My name is Nick and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Tuesday.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, everything is new and I have so many questions, but I have one problem I’d like some advice on please.

Tonight, before my evening meal, I was supposed to take my insulin shot (Novo Rapid) but I’m not sure if it worked properly. I think I reset the dosage level after the initial flushing but I really can’t remember. I haven’t given myself another shot but can anyone advise what I should do please?

Stupid thing to do I know but can anyone help and put my mind at ease.

Welcome Nick - it's a big shock but you'll soon find it becomes a way of life. If you're not sure if you've taken your insulin then check your BG levels after an hour and if they are high take a correction dose. Did your diabetes team advise you on correction doses?

We've all been in that position of being halfway through dinner and suddenly realising you forgot the sugar juice!!

yes, I have been given the dosage by team so I’ll do as you suggest.

Worried about overdosing so didn’t want to double dose myself.

Hi Nick, you did exactly the right thing! You are better off running the risk of NOT taking the insulin than of having 2 doses! You may go high after the meal but that is far better than going hypo after a double dose. As mentioned, just keep testing and you will probably be able to tell whether you did or not.

Correct. Sometimes it can take a while to kick in. Patience & keep checking.

Welcome to the forums @Nick Watts - very easy to forget when you injected but there are some handy gadgets around these days like these Timesulin pen caps if you're using disposable pens. (I've never used them myself so cannot vouch for how useful they are).
 
Thanks for that, I'll certainly take a look.

My mmol is 9.0 so I don't think I need to redose.
 
Hi. If you are using a Novorapid cartridge pen rather than disposable it should be the Echo pen and that shows the last dose given if you operate the push button (pull it out and then back in). Cartridge pens overall are preferable to disposables so ask for the GP/DN to swap if needed; I was offered a choice by my DN.

it’s scary and it seems like everyone is giving you information doctors nurses etc. I agree that going lower is with your dosage is better you can correct it , you can do this !!
