Hi,
I am 46 years young and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on April Fools day after having all the classic symptoms..
For a few weeks before I was always thirsty, and requiring the toilet through the night, my vision was going blurry, i felt worn down etc.etc...
After being talked/nagged into getting myself checked out by my wife... I finally booked a doctors appointment...(and I'm glad I did)
I (...being my usual stubborn self ) thought i was ok, and that i had a bug or something, and at worst i would be given a prescription from the doctors for some tablets and then be on my way... How wrong i was.!
For a start, ...and i don't mind admitting, i have always been a scaredy cat when it comes to injections, needles etc. To the point that i blacked out giving a blood sample which was being taken for my 'well man' doctors visit a few years ago,.... this means i have avoided doctors as much as possible since..
Anyway the blood check showed that my sugars were high thirties and i was showing ketones at +4....
i had never even heard of ketones up to that point and when they told me my body was potentially eating itself if i didnt get treatment i had a bit of a panic to say the least.
The doctor had to send me straight to hospital, where i spent the next four days getting sorted.
Now six weeks on i am injecting insulins (NovoRapid and Levemir) four times daily and doing five to six blood tests..
The initial diagnosis took me some time to get my head around and i have good and bad days thinking on it... But now accept this is how life will be for me...
It is a lot to take in when it happens, but considering seven weeks ago if anyone suggested i would be now injecting myself etc i would never of believed them... But i am.
The support from the hospital staff and doctors dieticians and my family has been excellent so far.. I am learning all the time and 'most of the time' my BS is now below 7, with the odd blip here and there...(note... avoid tikka masala nan bread and special pillau rice with lager)
I like reading fellow diabetics stories and finding new items and stories info etc. As i learn hopefully i will be able to help others
