Newly Diagnosed Type 1

Hi all, came across this forum as I try to understand the condition better....41yr old (from NZ but now living in Wales) and diagnosed with Type1 three weeks ago along with a 5 day stay in hospital. Never had a hypo until 3 days ago and now I have had 3 in as many days so contacted the local clinic for advise. I am on 3 doses of Novorapid (12,10,14) and nightly dose of Lantus (18). Seems excessive given other dosage numbers I have seen bandied about but I guess not one size fits all. I guess all will become clearer once I learn more about carbs and dosages etc. Until then I am at the mercy of the diabetic nurses....look forward to keeping in touch with the forum and learning more about diabetes.....must say the novelty of injections and pricks is wearing off pretty quickly...

The early days of Type 1 are hard because it's a massive lifestyle change, but it does get easier. I recommend pushing to be shown basic carb counting asap. It's not difficult and it's crucial for control.

I also recommend the book Think Like A Pancreas - because that's what we have to do.

Have you spoken to your team about your hypos? I hope they weren't too bad.

I was a late starter too! 54 in my case. I seem to remember it took almost 12 weeks for MY glucose levels to stop yo-yo-ing uncontrollably. Hopefully you'll have an easier ride. It does get easier so don't lose heart.

Another Late T1 Starter here, well 30 is pretty late. 16 years under the needle now.

I wish I had been taught how to carb count a the start, it's a steep learning curve all the same but you'll soon get the hang of it all.
 
Have ordered the book after reading a few threads on here that praise it so looks like it will be a solid investment. My first two hypos were not too bad but today was a pretty good wobble. Have been told to reduce my morning jab so will see how that goes. Definitely a lot of yo- young around with my blood glucose but diabetes clinic are pretty good here and am following up with them later this week and have an appointment with dietician in a few weeks so hopefully I can get on the dafne course
 
Hi @Kiwi75 . Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you're taking most of this diabetes stuff in your stride. There's a lot to learn and a lot of things will be specific to you.
DAFNE course will be a good source of knowledge for you, but you may have to wait a while to get on the course. Being newly diagnosed you may well go through a honeymoon period ( basically your pancreas will start to function again on an intermittent basis, leading to fluctuating control, nothing you can do about it and it won't last forever). DAFNE needs you to have a completely defunct pancreas for it to be a success hence you may have to wait 12 months + before getting on a course.

Thanks @therower. Definitely going through fluctuations at the moment after having my 4th hypo for the fourth day in a row having never had one before. I have lessened my morning dosage as advised by diabetes nurse but no change yet, in fact my blood glucose was 3.1 the lowest reading I have had in the last 3 weeks since diagnosis. All hypo's are early to mid afternoon and today's was only 2 hours after eating (Have not changed eating portions much)....sure is a honeymoon period lol. As for Rugby I am most definitely a fan, especially of the All Blacks...looking forward to them thrashing the Lions despite my wifes protestations (she is Welsh)
 
Hi @Kiwi75 . I'm sure you'll get things sorted, it takes time and is quite overwhelming at the start, do bite size bits and don't get stressed.
True England fan but have to admit to being in total admiration of All Blacks rugby.
As a Leicester Tigers fan I've had the pleasure of seeing some great players over the years and a good few were All Blacks.
Josh Kronfeld, Darryl Gibson, Aaron Mauger, Scott Hamilton and Big Bad Brad Thorn ( the wife's favourite) .
All great players AND really nice guys to meet.
Come on the Lions.
