Hi

My daughter Lauren aged 10 was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on wednesday night after my husband and myself noticed her drinking alot more water and juice than normal. I am also a type 1 diabetic and have been for 30 years , so i done a blood glucose test on lauren with my meter and to my horror her reading came up HIGH, i rang NHS direct first and was called back by a doctor who sent an ambulance to get lauren to hospital. Thankfully she is home now and coping really well, today she injected herself with insulin for the first time she was abit nervous to do it herself but this morning she asked me if she could do her insulin.

Just wanted to find out about any diabetic events ie day trips, weekend aways for families and children with diabetes, i have looked on diabetes uk but was wondering if there was others.

Hey tracy, sorry to hear about your daughters recent diagnosis. you must be relieved shes home safe and well with the bonus you have a good idea about it. You could check out diabetes message bored powered by v bulletin, should be easy to google. They have meets in different parts of the uk with families welcome and diabetics of all ages.

I'm so glad she's out of hospital now.

The thing that really helped with me was a buddy. A girl my age who has had diabetes longer. She make me realise that certain things are normal (unexpected hypos or highs, what happens with exercise, what to so at parties and other buffet style gatherings etc). We are still very close and she's still helping me (she's just had a baby and I'm trying). Could you ask the diabetic nurse if that exists around where you are?

Where abouts do you live? (You can PM me that if you'd like). I have a friend who organises kid support groups around the country.

Best of luck.

Hey Amberzak, does your friend organise anything in the Reading area that you know of? My daughter is 5, diagnosed in January and we know no one at all of her age who also has type 1.
While I wouldn't wish this on anyone, it'd be really nice for her to have a friend or two who know how she feels.

Hi. Glad your daughter is back home now. You could ask at the clinic if there are any local groups that they know of. There are quite a few active groups that meet up. We joined one in the East of England which is very proactive and organises family events. We've also been on a JDRF discovery day - they do quite a few around the country and its great to meet up with local families as well as find out about research. JDRF know most of the groups so they could also point you to one. It's definitely helpful. My daughter made a firm friend and we try and meet up for playdates. There are also FB groups that are very supportive for parents. One like the previous post mentioned or Parents of T1 children in the UK. One poster is even compiling a map so you can see which family lives close to you to make connections which is nice. x

Tracey, just noticed your in Essex. I know Colchester have a group called Circle D. The East of England Paediatric Diabetes Network cover Essex too. Their next event is a research day on Sept 7th so you could get to meet some families then? I know one family coming who have an 11yo girl from Harlow. x
