Can any one advice my son is 13 and recently diagnosed and bloods are still high but he is finding sticking to 3 meals really hard as he is really hungry between meals especially between lunch and tea can anyone suggest snacks that he can have that won't require him needing extra insulin and the same with drinks can he still have milk or hot chocolate in evening

Hi @Sunnydeb
welcome to the forum :)

first choice needs to be have a word with his diabetic support nurse at hospital -- they will have come across this situation many times before and should have some advice for you that takes into account your son's individual circumstances.

looking at the sort of things that your son could snack on -- things like celery sticks with cream cheese , cold meat slices ( ham , chicken , turkey , beef ) , cheese , hard boiled eggs .

as for drinks -- short term I would avoid milk until his blood sugars have lowered ,and same with hot chocolate.
once he has been sorted out on his insulin regime using his blood sugar meter as the guide , foods can be introduced as you will see how blood sugar reacts , or insulin can be adjusted to allow for the food / drink being consumed with your nurse's advice.

all the best

Thanks for that it just so hard for him as he's used to snacking when he comes home from school and is starving but I'm worried about his bloods rising

how long ago was he diagnosed ?
has his diabetic nurse offered any help so far ?
what sort of insulin regime is he on ? ( a background insulin like lantus or levemir ) and then injecting with each meal ( fast acting such as apidra , novorapid , novolog )
or is he taking 2 fixed doses per day of a mixed insulin ( mixtard 30/70 for example ? )

Yes only been diagnosed after having DKA last week he's on novorapid x3 and Lantus , but now he's feeling better in himself he wants to eat as he hadn't eaten for a week and his appetite is back got nurse in tomorrow before he goes to school hopefully Thursday but the impression we get is they rather not to snack but he's not great with breakfast and all the things he likes he can't have really as they wl up his sugars

it will be a new learning curve for sure and right now it is really important to try and establish some sort of daily routine.
the three meals a day unfortunately is a part of that routine in these next few months - your son will have enough going on with growing up and all the hormonal changes so trying to eat just snacking type things in between meals won't really assist in keeping blood sugars stable.

Your family have had a hell of a shock and after a week it won't have really sunk in yet.

my no carb ideas of cold meat are really about the best i can come up with - hopefully some other love people will be along to offer some other ideas for snacking that are no carb.
