Hi I have been diagnosed this week with type 2 DB I have just found out I have I blood pressure, High colesterol which I have been given meds for. My fasting gloucose is 8 and the other test was think its the Hbci or what ever was is 6 does this mean I've only just started with diabetes . I must say I've done nothing but cry since Monday I feel like I've suddenly lost my health as it was only picked up accidentaly. The doctor wants to treat it with diet only and exercise, I must say I dont have a bad diet anyway and I walk an hour at least every day.

Same here. Diet and exercise only with high blood pressure and high cholestrol. Have you been given a testing kit? Any information about diabetes? This site is really good for information and help. Testing your bg wil tell you what foods send the count up and you can then avoid them. Diabetes can be controlled Sandrag. Just ask questions amd someone will know the answer or know where to look. :)

Hi Sandra,
Welcome to the forum, I know its a shock when you first get Diagnosed, but once you come to terms with being a Diabetic you will learn that its a managable condition, and as long as you take care with your diet and exercise you should be able to get on with your life. With a HbA1c of 6.0 you have a far better start than most of the Forum members, and there's no reason as long as you watch what you eat and keep up with the exercise, you can't get your HbA1c even lower. I suggest you have read through the threads relating to the effects of carbs on Blood Glucose.
Also a good starting point would be; http://www.dsolve.com

Best of luck

Hi Sandra,
If you have the blood pressure and cholesterol too, It's metabolic syndrome and it appears to be caused by too much circulation of insulin. It does seem to be strongly genetic.
Don't panic, there's a lot to learn ,but changes happen fairly slowly.
If you're up for it, try the lower carbohydrate approach. Cut sugars, including natural sugars right out and starches down as low as you can.
As soon as your blood sugar level goes down into the normal range, you'll start to feel well.
It would be surprising nowadays if you were given a blood test meter or anything else really useful.
Let us know what you've been advised to do and we'll try to help you undestand it.

Thank you all for your support. On top of all this I was recently diagnosed with adult onset Ashma. what a life eh, I've not been offered anything yet but seeing the nurse tomorrow , They say I dont need to test myself , but cant understand what they can offer as I dont have a bad diet, I dont eat chocolate, sweets, pastry or anything fatty , well occasionaly when I'm fed up and eat cheese straight from the fridge, If anything I like bread & pasta, Can I push for a testing kit? I did think of buying one but the strips etc are really expensive.

sandrag, don't panic about the asthma, either. I've lived with it all my life and, compared to what was available when I was a wee spud, the modern treatments seem almost miraculous.

Best of luck to you.

Sorry to have to tell you this (and your meter would agree with me if they were to give you one) but the cheese is a lot better for you than the bread and pasta.
