Welcome to the forum.
Yes the Honeymoon Period is common.
I was diagnosed just short of two years ago and I had it for over a year.
It can make things quite unpredicatable but enjoy it while it lasts.

Welcome to the group!

I don't remember if I had a honeymoon period but I wish I could have one now!

All the best

im getting on fine at the moment, im testing my bs alot everyday to see where im at, hopefully the honeymoon will last forever its so draining though every single day.

A warm welcome to the forum Nicky

I really don't recall my Honeymoon period although I was diagnosed 32 years ago, remember taking quite a bit of insulin post-diagnosis then dropping down to next to nothing but that's about it, only really heard of the term The Diabetic Honeymoon period when I came to the forum.

Anyway, nice to have another type 1 on board and look forward to your contributions.

my insolin dosages are very low at the moment how much insolin would u take with your meals?

Hey I was diagnosed 7 weeks ago (so basically the same time as you) and I started my honey moon about 2 weeks ago. At first it scared me because I wasn't in control anymore but now I'm enjoying it (if it is impossible to enjoy things like this! Haha)

I'm now on 6 units of Lantus (basal).
I'm on a low carb diet so I am only injecting humalog with my meals if I eat more than 20g of carb (1unit: 20g) and this seems to be working pretty well for me at the moment. So today I've only had 1unit of humalog and that was with my lunch because I had roasted Mediterranean veg, chicken and a few berries and nuts.

My BG levels have been:
8am- 6.2
12pm- 6.6
5.30pm- 5.2
Now- 5.9

What amounts of insulin are you on? What are your levels like? Any tips for me? Haha x

Hi Nicky, I came out of hospital 2 weeks ago on insulin - Im waiting on blood tests to come back so not really sure what I am at the moment! Its all still sinking for me also, its overwhelming isn't it?

My doses have dropped also since coming home - Im on 6 Units of Lantus at night and 3 Unit Apidra before meals, will go to 2 Units for brekkie tomorrow and see how that goes. I find that as Ive started to feel better and get my energy back, Im need less bcos of this too. Im still getting to grips with it all and testing a lot but I now know that the less insulin I take, the less chance there is that Ill have a hypo - I had a few of these the first week. I start to get hypo symptoms at 7 which I know isn't a real hypo but Im told its because Ive high for so long. I try to sit with it but its not easy so I tend to snack between meals if start feeling jittery although since I dropped my dose, Im not feeling this way as much. Does this happen to you?

Do you have a snack before bed? I usually do even if I don't fancy it so Ive decided not to tonight and see what happens. Oh w ell, I had a slice of toast a few mins ago at blood sugar of 6 as I was starting to feel iffy!

Morning I know it's early but I started carb counting from my first week. It means you match the amount of carbs you intake with the amount of insulin you give yourself to imitate the pancreas. Once you calculate it correctly it should help prevent you having hypos and keep your blood glucose in a good range.

My diabetic nurse initially told me to have four units before breakfast lunch and dinner, but I eat a different amounts for each meal so I didn't understand why I should give myself the same amount as it was also make me hypo after breakfast for eg If I ate a banana for breakfast that is 20g of carbs, I was giving 4 units of insulin to cover. In actual fact though I only needed 2 units because my ratio at the time was 1nit:10g of carbs therefore I was giving myself double the amount of insulin required!!! This had two side effects... Hypos and weight gain because insulin also facilitates the storing of fat.

I was having a snack before bed because my blood sugar would drop a lot over the night but I have now lowered my Lantus (basal) and don't require a snack any more... Before bed I was 5.9 and this morning I am 5.4.

It is all overwhelming but I just think I would hate for any of the complications later on to happen to me so I'm grabbing the bull by the horns and arming myself with enough information as possible. X

You'll all get there in the end.
It is overwhelming at first.
I was diagnosed two years ago this Friday and I still find it overwhelming.
I once read a comment on here that the one predictable thing about diabetes is that it will be unpredictable. Some of the time this is the case but it can be controlled.
When I was first diagnosed I was on 10 units Lantus which dropped to 9.
They also originally put me on 4 units of NovoRapid with every meal.
This dropped very quickly to 0 with breakfast, 1 at lunch and 3-4 at lunchtime.
I am now taking a lot more than that and although I thought the honeymoon was a pain at the time, I would love to go back to taking so little insulin.
When I was taken in to hospital at diagnosis the registrar said to me that Diabetes is all about education and learning as much as you can. I have tried to do this and read as much as I can but this forum is one of the best places for ijnformation and people's experiences.

hey theres so much to it aint there, my bs are pretty good aswell mostly between 4 and 8 everyday, at the moment i could only take around 2 units of insolin with dinner/lunch depending what im eating, its all a learning curve for us, but at the moment our pancreas is producing small bits of insolin thats we are are taking less insolin but this wont last forever haha nice to meet someone the same as me anyway haha hope your doing ok x

Morning guys, it sound like you are doing really well - if I saw those low numbers I would have a heart attack! I have been a pity over the hypos and feeling very anxious about them but haven't had one in over a week so am relaxing about it now tg. I was told to aim for between 5 and 10 pre meals and Im achieving that at the mo. Im meeting the dietician tomorrow to have a carb counting session so looking forward to that as I do feel I need to understand what Im eating.

I lost quite a bit of weight so want to get some of that back on. I am conscious that low carbing is the way to go but am trying out different foods to see what effect they are having. So this morning I woke to 8.6, had a slice of toast at 1am as felt iffy at 6.0 during the night. Had two Weetabix with semi skimmed milk and coffee and 2 hours later Im 13.6 - don't think this agrees with me but this is a carby breakfast! On the other had, I only took 2 units this morn and Ive been out and about in town etc after breakfast. Cos we need to take into account if we are going to be active after a meal right? They have told me not to be checking 2 hrs after meals, only pre-meals but I feel this is something that needs to be done, for my own curiousity.

All fun and games innit!!

my insolin dosages are very low at the moment how much insolin would u take with your meals?

Not sure if your asking me there Nicky, however the answer is it varies from person to person as we can all have different insulin-to-carb ratio's and these can change from morning to night, also weight and exercise can have a big impact on how much insulin a person injects so it's not all plain sailing I'm afraid. My own insulin-to-carb ratio is around 1 unit of insulin to 10g of carbs which is round about the average.

There's an on-line carb counting course for those who are on basal/bolus, it's similar to the DAFNE course and you might find it useful:
