Hi all i was diagnosed type 2 last month after a random blood test which was 8.9 i have just had my first hb1ac 7.2 so i was told to keep doing what im doing and go back in 3 mnths i also had my retinopothy test which was fine .and i have an app with dietician next week .i am not on any meds just diet control at the moment.so i will be asking lots of questions in the coming months

Hi Lynne,

HBA1C of 7.2 is a great starting point . I was 10.3 3 months ago and am now down to 5.8. I have spoken to several NHS professionals, but the advice I have taken from this forum has provided the core of my treatment and recovery. I have just come back from a clothing shopping spree in Redditch. Thank goodness for Matalan and Primark as I have ditched 4 jackets, 20 shirts 20 trousers and more. Would have cost me a bomb from M&S & co . I dont know what has cost me the most, new clothes or the glucose test strips

All the Best - Steve.

hi steve yes i know how you feel on the clothes front i put out eight binbags of clothes last fri for charity i am fast running out of things to wear. are you diet controlled as well .also am lucky being in wales we dont have to pay for strips. best wishes lynne

Hi Lynne51,

I'm a Type 2 myself - nine years on from diagnosis and free of complications.

An HbA1c of 7.2% isn't too bad but you need to reverse the situation and get it lower. Don't do what I did and just keep listeniing to the "keep doing what you are doing advice". Doing that took me to 9.4% before I started to reverse my condition over the last twelve months through changing my diet. Since then my HbA1c haS reduced from 8.5% > 6.8% > 5.7% > 5.5% and last time 5.3%.

My advice would be to watch the carbohydrate intake.

Best Wishes - John

Hi Lynne,

I was on 2 x 500g Metformin at diagnosis. At my 3 month review I had gone from 17st 5 to 14 stone and my HBA1C to 5.8 so my nurse asked me to drop to 1 x 500. I only take an additional pill if I go out to eat which I do about twice a month. Yesterday I went to a Bangladeshi all you can eat buffet (avoiding the rice, chapatis, nan, samosas etc). I did a post meal test at 2 hours and I was 5.2. I had also taken an additional Metformin after the meal.
I have gone from sedentary to cycling 6 miles (most days) and walking 3.5 miles every day. I lost my job at the end of June which has helped to facilitate the exercise, so need to make sure I make time when I eventually become re-employed.
I use a lo-carb diet and test several times daily. My GP's rules are strips for T2's on insulin only, so I buy mine on ebay.

Regards Steve.

Hi steve
well you seemed to have got it nailed i hope i will be able to do the same i have lost three stone already i was dieting for three months before diagnosis exercise wise i walk for an hour every day which is excellant for me as i have polyarthritus in feet hips and knees plus degenerative disc disease which is makeing my spine collapse but hey look on the bright side things could be worse.all the best lynne.

Hi john
i have a app with dietician next week so i am writing questions down to ask her on carbs.i agree with what you say about carrying on doing same thing as when i asked doc about testing bg he said dont bother i told him that goes against everything i have read so he said well what are you going to do if its high after eating and i said i would do more exercise and reduce carbs in next meal he didnt say anything so thats the reason for joining this site to be able to ask questions of pple like yourself that know a lot more than my gp and myself so thanking you all in advance. best wishes lynne

You seem to have the message and know where you are going Lynne.

Good luck - John
