Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes following a partial pancreatectomy. I'm told it is neither type 1 nor type 2 but doesn't seem to be on the list of options when I gave my joining details. Firstly I'd like to know if anyone else has this condition and how do you cope long term.
Prior to my illness I was fit and healthy and had a good diet, including large amounts of fruit. I have maintained my diet but everything I read suggests I should reduce my carb intake. Surely I need the carbs to live healthily and actively.
Is it possible to have partial pancreatectomy diabetes controlled by diet or is the insulin injections something I will have to live with?
I now seem to live my life around my medication regimen, do you get used to it? Prior to becoming ill 16 months ago I could count on one hand the amount of tablets I took a year, now I take about 20 a day plus 4 injections and 4 blood tests, getting me down.

Welcome. It sounds like the type 3c subforum might be a good place to start. People in there will have lots more experience similar to your own than many of us type 2’s.

I’m afraid I can’t answer whether insulin is a forgone conclusion. I guess it would depend how much pancreatic function you’ve lost. What guidance have you been given from your medical team? Has the remaining function been tested?

Carbs are not essential to healthy life. The functions they perform can and for some people are replaced by other foods. Proteins and fats and a considerable number of micronutrients are essential but anything gained from carbs can be found in other sources too in varying degrees. Whether you choose to limit them or by how much is a personal decision. Using insulin and having sufficient insulin production of your own does make the factors in that choice different to if you aren’t
