Hi everyone...am new here and new to diabetes. I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and put on metformin 500 twice a day. I have been taking my fasting blood sugar in the morning before any eating. It doesn't seem to matter what I have eaten the day before as my fasting was been anywhere between 106-163. I am only eating 1000-1500 calories and have totally cut out all chips, pretzels, candy, ice cream or any other sugars that are considered junk food. I feel like I am doing something wrong. I have been on a leave of absence from working as a very active, busy RN in a hospital and am hoping that the inability to walk a lot (had ankle surgery and have been off since middle of July) is why my sugars have been high in the morning. Any thoughts or suggestions. I keep a log of all my calories and carbs and think that I am doing well in this department. It is just a downer when i only eat less than 1000 calories and my fasting this morning was 137. I need some reassurance that I am doing this new diet right. Thanks in advance

Hi @takararose , welcome to the forum.

Morning numbers are the ones that often come down last, and what you've eaten yesterday doesn't do much anymore after all those hours.
What about using your glucose meter to test before and two hours after meals? This way you can see how that particular meal affected you, and you can adjust it next time if it made you rise or repeat the meal if it worked well.

Here's a link to a very informative read on diabetes, written by one of our members: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html
Many of our members found their blood glucose dropped nicely, and they lost weight by just reducing the carbs, not calories as well.

I see you're from the US so I'll include a chart showing the different units for BG and hba1c used in the US and the UK, which could come in handy when reading other people's posts using different units. It converts your mg/dl to our mmol/l, and your hba1c in % to our mmol/mol.

It's the carb content not the calories that is the problem.
1000 calories with 150g carbs has far far more affect than
5000 calories with 30g carbs.
Avoid potatoes, rice, pasta, pastry, fruit except berries, cakes or anything made with flour.
Eat real meat with fat, butter, cream, cheese, EGGS (the more the better), olive oil.
Research Keto, and you will get an idea of what suits a type 2 diabetic best.

Hello and welcome @takararose

As @ajbod said the issue for blood sugars is the carbs not the calories.

Read the link posted by @Antje77 it's one that I really recommend. I was given it when first diagnosed and found it very helpful.

Read around and ask questions. The fact that you are using a meter is great as it will help you work out how your body reacts to different foods. I suggest reducing your carb intake and seeing what effect that has on your levels.

Good luck and welcome :)

Welcome @takararose You will get lots of excellent advice and support from this forum.
As the others have said concentrate on lowering the carbs and not the calories. Testing before a meal and then 2 hours after your first bite can work out how your blood glucose reacts and how many carbs you can tolerate, some can have around 150g per day and others, like me, have to go as low as 20g or less. If you check out the recipes and ‘what have you eaten….’ posts you’ll get some great meal ideas. Good luck :)
