I got diagnosed 6 months a go to cut a long story short I was and still am on a lot of medication for cluster headaches and at the time was getting very tyred and depressed, so took a trip to the doctors about it lots of blood test later get told I'm type 2 diabetic :shock: .

Told I will get appointment for dietitian,

That was total wast of time got told what I'm eating and doing is fine!!!! I'm 6ft3 and weigh 20st, 18 months ago i weighed 15.5st. been on constant diet but no joy weight keeps pilling on,

Told will have appointment at hospital to discus my diabetes

Still waiting for appointment

Told will have appointment at hospital to have an eye test

been but don't know the results yet.

then on Monday get phone call saying I need to go in and have my HBA1C blood test taken, fortunately not working Tuesday morning so go for test nurse says results will be back in a week to 10 days and if there is a problem they will ring me. got a phone call last night at 6PM told need to com back in to see diabetic nurse ASAP sound of urgency from receptionist so make appointment for the 2nd of Feb at 3:30 i ask why get told cant tell me why then as if they got my blood test results back told yes and I have a reading of 7.1, Now is this a good reading a bad reading I don't know what??

please some one help I'm feeling lost with no information and no support

firstly 7.1 is too high but nothing major ,it is recommended that a diabetic has between 6/7, over 7 is when problems can start occuring, i myself was 7.2 last hba1c but hoping its down this time, a non diabetic would be around 4 or 5, look around the forum as there is lots of info
as for the weight gain, are u on any meds? what kind of food do u eat daily? im sure another type 2 will be along with better info soon, try not to worry as stress can cause high bloods too :?

Thanks for the info for got to say I Have High Blood pressure as well the meds I'm currently on are

every day I take
1 x Aspirin 300mg in morning
3 x Verapermil 40MG
1 x citalopram 20MG
1 x larnzapoon

when got really bad headache
2 x sumatrapram 1000mg

also recently started having testosterone injections had first one 10 days ago

diet is

breakfast
Kellogg's Special K Red berries - skimmed milk no sugar

Lunch
cucumber (about 2 -3 inch)
red pepper (full)
celery (1 x stick)
tin of new potatoes
small tin of corn
meat / prawns 120 - 150 Grams
Low fat yogurt

2 x cans of diet pop or bottled water

dinner

varies lat night I had 2 x pork steak, jacket potato, coleslaw and ratatouille

always try to eat healthy getting diet low sugar foods and don't eat allot of take aways, also don't drink that much may be 5 bottles of beer/cider a week some weeks nothing at all.
 
Looks to me like far too many carbs in that diet, particularly at breakfast!

You are not too far gone yet so you might be able to achieve a lot by reducing the carbs, start here

I'm a bit surprised they haven't given you metformin: this (along with exercise) should reduce your insulin resistance and make the insulin you still produce go further. Too much insulin and too many carbs are what is usually responsible for weight gain. Reducing the carbs reduces your self-produced insulin levels as does attacking the IR.

"Healthy" low fat foods often contain more carbs, at this stage fat is the least of your worries except for trans fats (hydrogenated fats) in processed foods. Fish is good (Omega 3s), white meat and loads of different vegetables and salads

with sufficiently low carbs and normal BG I can eat fatty red meats quite satisfactorily, this doesn;t work for everyone though.
 
thanks for the advice on the cereal what would you suggest seen as the special K is what the dietitian told me to eat!!!!!

can I have Bacon and egg's again????? :lol:
 
low carb is a good way of controlling blood sugar, it works in us type 1,s but moreso in type 2,
buy yourself the collins carb counter book it is around 3.00 and tells u what the carbs are in most foods, then cut back on the carbs and im sure your bloods will lower
 
Hi gregc,

Your dietician has given you terrible advice. Special K and skimmed milk has virtually nothing of any nutitional value, just a whole lot of processed starch which will shoot your blood sugar upwards.
A high blood sugar will cause you to produce too much insulin, making you insulin resistant and causing you to gain weight.
Bacon and eggs has 10 of the 13 known vitamins and will have a small impact on your blood sugar. You will therefore produce much less insulin, reducing your insulin resistance and helping you to lose weight. Low insulin levels will also help you to burn body fat and leave you feeling less hungry later in the day.
Bacon and eggs every time!
