Hi All
I was diagnosed with type yesterday following a BS of 27, although I had a suspicion of diabetes it was still a bit of a shock, but hey-ho life goes on. 8) What I want to know is which diet sheets to follow(very little advice from the hospital) and I am waiting for an appointment at the diabetes clinic. I have a BMI 32.4 so I am over weight and could do with losing a few pounds

Regards to all
Harry

treatment: 2x 500mg Metformin week 1 then 4x 500 week2

Hi Harry ,and welcome to the forum.have a good read round and you will find lots of ideas about diet and controlling your diabetes. Please ask us questions .The basic diet advice is to reduce your carbohydrate intake one way or another because it is carbs that affect blood sugar. How you do this is trial and error because we are all different in that respect.Do you have a blood testing meter?

Hello Sue,
Thanks for the post Sue,as I was only diagnosed 24hrs ago,I have been trawling the net and going round in circles as soon as I think I have a handle on the problem up pops another site with information which is completely opposite to the previous site. Whilst I have seen the BS monitors I am at a loss to what I need in this regard and open to suggestions.

Cheers

Harry

Hi Harry,

I was diagnosed with type 2 last friday, so we are both new :) I was kinda expecting it BUT I think even if you feel you are, you really can't be because it always feels like a shock (could be wrong but i'm going with how I feel) There is so much to accept right now, so much to learn, its good that you (and I) have found this place, i think it would be so much harder 'alone'.

As for the moniters, I waited and got mine from the diabetic nurse on weds just gone, i'm having problems with it though as it seems to make it work I have to do a test run with a control solution that DOESN'T come with the kit lol So after a few days of pricking myself with no results, I find this out today and phone the company, who were very helpful and are going to send it out within 2 to 4 working days. I am slightly miffed about it though because now i'm still waiting to test myself and am still in a kind of limbo! The meter itself is a bit fancy but once you read the manual it's not too bad, try and get ALL of the needles and testings strips via a script though because I asked the guy at the pharmacy how much the strips were to buy and he said £28 for 50! Ouchy! It seems that companies have found a way to make money off our illness, give out the machine for nothing but make us pay through the nose for the extras to make it work! Are you going to be making an appt with a diabetic nurse? I didn't really learn much that I didn't already know but it was valuble to get the bs moniter and to be booked in to get my feet sorted.

All i'm doing at the moment is trying to stick to below 80g of carbs a day, until I know what I can and can't eat, which is much better than I used to be, I used to LIVE on carbs!

Welcome my fellow newbie!

Becca

Hello Becca,
I know what you mean becca, I was sent straight to A&E and following the blood test I had a BS27 and they talked about keeping me overnight however it would appear that the bed was needed for something more serious, so they give me a shot of insulin and put me on a drip then sent me home with the tablets. there was no DN as the diabetic nurses are not due to start until 23rd Feb  I was discharged with no info so may gatecrash the DNs clinic on Tuesday until then I will watch the suger intake and look for a monitor so many to choose from :?

Keep on smiling
:D :D :D

Hey Harry,

That's awful!! Glad you found this site, hopefully the info here can make up for the lack of it on the NHS!

You keep smiling too :D
