Groundbreaking Study by AGH Neurosurgical Team Suggests Artery Compressing Base of Brain is Factor in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
http://www.pr-inside.com/groundbreaking-study-by-agh-neurosurgical-team-r2055372.htm
Allegheny General Hospital physicians made a new discovery linking the central nervous system to the onset and progression of type 2.
They present evidence... that "vascular compression of a section of the brain called the medulla oblongata is a factor in some patients with type 2 and that microvascular decompression surgery (MVD) may be an effective treatment for the condition.... decompressing the right cranial nerve X – or the vagus nerve - and the medulla oblongata could result in better glycemic control for patients with this disease".
And get this..."One patient was able to discontinue his diabetic medications entirely".
Not sure it explains what the treatment involves... 8)

A follow up with some on the fence scepticism...
"Perhaps it's just too kooky even for desperate patients to believe. Or perhaps they simply haven't heard about it because the media have largely taken a pass on covering it, in which case we can expect to be accused of suppressing the discovery of the century." 8)

Isn't the medulla oblongata related to anger??? Could it be that angerand T2 is related???

Could be... I used to get very angry... maybe stress and hypertension helped my DM to emerge...argh.
Virtuous circle, you have DM now don't get cross at the injustice of it all.... 8)

Do you think we should apply for head transplants :?:
I want a younger model :D

I was taught that the medulla oblongata controls heartbeat, breathing and blood vessel diameter and coordinates voluntary and involuntary responses. It controls many emotions, fear, anger, pleasure and sorrow.
I am not a brain surgeon but my questions would be, "Does this procedure mean that you will be devoid of emotion afterwards and would you perform this on your nearest and dearest?" I think I'll sit this one out if it is offered.
This article seems a bit Frankenstein to me and one slip during the procedure and it would mean sudden death.
Reminds me of the 1940's when it was thought that the answer to mental health issues was to treat with lobotomies. This worked for a small percentage of patients but the rest either died or lived their lives devoid of any real purpose and emotion. (I am sure you have seen "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest).
There are plenty of bad tempered people and those who need anger management about who are not diabetic.

I 'enjoyed' One Flew Over TCN as a book and film... you might also like the biopic of Frances Farmer which is a true story... very sad.

Those with anger management... maybe some don't even know they are on their way to DM... might make them cool it. 8)

Hi Jim,
I saw the video of Frances Farmer many moons ago, tragic indeed.
Some people were sent to and detained in mental hospitals as a further stepping stone to the workhouses that existed. Their only crime was being poor and they languished there until the day they died. Promiscuous girls were also enshrined on the say so of a parent or guardian, boys involved were not punished. (Imagine if that happened today and how many new hospitals they would have to build  ). There were very flimsy excuses for detaining people and the medical assesments I have read on some of these admissions would make you weep. Man's inhumanity to man.

I'd prefer to stick to the diabetes rather than have brain surgery  Agree with Carol that a head transplant might be the answer - I too could do with a better model

That film lodged in my brain so much her name got on the shortlist for daughters' names... and it won! 8)
The new movie Shutter Island is a bit similar but tragic in a different way... watch it if you haven't then don't tell anyone who hasn't how it ends!
