TCD Scientists Make Significant Type 2 Diabetes Breakthrough - Scientists at Trinity College Dublin have discovered what could be the underlying basis for Type 2 diabetes, they found that the peptide hormone, Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP), which gets deposited in the pancreas in Type 2 diabetes, is the trigger for a protein complex called the inflammasome.

Pilot Study Demonstrates Safety of Diabetes Medication for Patients With Alzheimer's — A pilot study suggests the diabetes medication pioglitazone is generally well tolerated and may warrant further study as a treatment for patients with Alzheimer's disease, according to a report posted online that will appear in the January 2011 print issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Sanofi discontinuing old insulin pens in UK - Discontinuing use of the old insulin pens will leave Sanofi with two delivery options for its insulin products; Sanofi's move is in response to June guidance from the UK National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) which aims to make administration of insulin safer.

NICE recommends liraglutide for type 2 - In draft guidance, NICE recommends liraglutide[[1]] (Victoza, Novo Nordisk) 1.2 mg daily for some people with type 2 but does not recommend liraglutide at 1.8mg daily, as the evidence suggests no significant additional benefit with the higher dose.
