NHS: Benefits of statins explored

In their recent critical analysis of the JUPITER (Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention) study ...... findings suggest that the three-fourths of patients who take statins to prevent a first cardiovascular event do not benefit from this treatment. The health and economic implications for these patients and for the $26-billion-per-year statin market are enormous.

Published online October 22, 2010 in the European Heart Journal by Dr Wolfgang Koenig (University of Ulm Medical Center, Germany) and Dr Paul Ridker (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston), the data showed that patients with a 10-year Framingham risk score >20% or an estimated Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) risk >5% had statistically significant reductions, 50% and 43%, respectively, in the risk of MI, stroke, or cardiovascular death when treated with rosuvastatin compared with patients treated with placebo.

Koenig said that the European decision differs from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval made earlier this year......
