I attended week 2 of my NHS Diabetes X-Pert patient course today. When the dietician was asking the class what we should eat, I felt enraged as they dutifully shouted out the answers...

"Low Fat!!"
"Lots of starchy carbs!!"

"Yes well done !!"

I couldnt stand it any longer so I stood up...

"Excuse me but for 12 months, I went on a personal campaign to eradicate fat and red meat and eat lots of healthy food, especially rice, pasta and wholemeal bread - After doing that for 12 months, I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes - So do you think that there is a possibility that the high carbs manifested in my diabetes?"........

After an uneasy pause, the dietician supported by the rest of the class, suggested I must have been an undiagnosed diabetic anyway!!. DOH!

Any ways. I asked her - "If I have been low carbing at 50 grams per day since diagnosis and in 2 months have lost 2 stones and reduced my "average" BG from 16 to 5.4, would you advise me to increase my carb intake to what you are recommending?"

To my amazement she said no - because what you are doing is working !!!!!! :o :o

my nhs dietician was great as ive said b4, she said as long as it isnt no carbs and its working then great :D

I think my Diabetic Nurse/Dietician must be the exception to the rule...it was her that told me about this forum and suggest I give Low Carbs a go!! Last week I lost 3lbs which for me is great, I am going to lower my carb intake to 60g a day this week and see how I go.

Well done lulu, and thanks for letting us know your dietician pointed you in this direction.
The tide might actually be turning! :D

Ahh, a note from the famous Fergus, I have read many a post about you my friend. Thanks for your support, take care, Lulu.

Wow that's great!! a medical professional agreeing with us!!

I have now managed to reduce carbs enough that yesterday having been for a run in the morning and having just salad and meats for lunch I didn't need a lunchtime jab. My total bolus insulin for the day was only 4 units (and 3 of those were porridge for breakfast!) BG still low enough after an afternoon swim with my son that I could have an ice cream too!!

Pah.. low carb... will never work!! :D
