Hello,

My partner has just been diagnosed with type 1, I was just wondering what support the NHS give prescription wise, will the likes of test strips be on perscription?

Thanks
James

Hi James. I'm also a T1.
Everything required for T1 diabetes is available on the NHS including test strips & insulin.

Don’t forget to get the GP to fill in a prescription fee exemption form. All prescriptions are free for diabetics

In addition to what @claire1991 has very rightly said type 1 diabetics are eligible for free prescriptions. Your partner will need to complete a declaration and should receive a certificate which needs renewing periodically.

Don't forget (very pertinent for the time of year) she is also eligible for a free flu jab.

And I can't emphasise too much the importance for her to get the medical exception certificate: in the past there have been some problems if you do not have this.

Also free eye tests but not dental

Lulz, it's like winning the NHS lottery with a diabetes diagnosis...no offense meant or intended, T1 diabetic myself.

Consider investing in a freestyle Libre - it's something you'll most likely need to fund personally until it becomes available on NHS/they're willing to fund. But in all the years I've been a diabetic it's by far the most useful monitoring and progressive diabetic tool I've had.
