Hi Everyone, Just wondering if anyone else has been suffering cramps in their calfs or hands mainly at night?
I am wondering if it's down to medication or my BG levels are consistently high these days. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Rob.

Hi Bertybean that is such a coincidence I have developed night cramps in my calf muscles and pain in my heels over the last 2 weeks. I am off to the Docs tomorrow so will post what the Doc has to say. I am Type 1 diabetic diagnosed a year ago aged 55. Speak tomorrow, Coco4

Please don't let anyone prescribe Quinine Sulphate for your cramp. The drug was banned in US 1999 having been the cause of 90 deaths from prolonged usage. In my case I now have kidney damage.

I think statins can cause cramps and muscle pain, I think its best you have a word with the Doc. they might be able to change you onto something different.

Thanks for the response and will be very interested what your Doc has to say coco4.

I was getting terrible leg cramps EVERY night. Started taking a magnesium supplement and having one glass of tonic water before bed. Touch wood, havent had it since. Its only been a week but so far so good.

Hi Bertybean,

For many years before my diagnosis of Type 2 I suffered on and off with night cramps in my calves...

Since my blood sugar has come under control I have not had a single cramp.

Warm regards

Sandra

Whoa hang on a second, I take Quinine Sulphate prescribed by my GP, I have taken them for years and years due to nocturnal cramps, without them I can't sleep. I have not had a single bad reaction to the Quinine, so lets not tar all with the same brush eh? There are drugs banned here that are used all around the world, and vice versa, but for those of us who need a medication that is banned in another country, scaremongering is not the answer, in my opinion.

Its ok for you to accuse me of scaremongering - I choose to believe the FDA who leave the rest of the world standing (and yes I am English) when it comes to medical care. The cases I quoted have been thoroughly researched leaving no doubt as to the cause of the patients' deaths. Like you, I suffered calf and thigh cramp so bad that on one occasion I had to have medical treatment as a result of losing consciousness through pain and falling flat on my face onto a chair - I was out for 5 hours. Naturally I was pleased to be given Quinine because, from the first tablet, I never had another attack of cramp. Eight years later I find I have paid the price with kidney damage - just Google side effects of Quinine - you just may change your mind. Magnesium is a great alternative although I do not have to take it as I stopped experiencing cramps the moment my BG's came under control - of course I did not know I was a Diabetic when suffering cramp originally. You could have moderated your approach to my post because I have always looked to your renderings with great interest - I am only trying to do you a favour - also, how do you know your organs are not under attack from QS? - I had no side effects just like you!! I will CONTINUE to post my warnings about QS everytime I see some poor soul suffering like I did.

Hi Bertybean went to Docs yesterday to discuss leg cramps. I started off by explaining the frequency and time of the day I was experiencing them. The doctor asked if I was concerned?!!!!! :x I must have looked incredulious because I certainly felt it. I told him that if I didn't have diabetes I would not have even thought about seeing a doctor about them. I said my main concern was that maybe the cramping was indicative of some diabetic complication he neither agreed or disagreed. I also put forward that I had read that injecting insulin could be attributable to lowering potassium levels and this would cause leg cramps. He said that could happen, but it would take a long time to do that, however he didn't know how long. He then noticed that I also take the drug Metformin so he referred to a book he had to see if leg cramps are a side affect of Metformin, but he was satisfied by what he had read that they weren't. After telling him how anxious I am about the whole diabetic thing he said well your BS is well controlled and we took some bloods a little while ago so I said yes, but you weren't testing for anything cramp related. He then said well if you are happy for another blood test we'll arrange one and test potassium levels. If you don't hear from us you will know everything is fine. I give up. Sorry haven't been any help in solving why you may be expeiencing cramps too, Coco4
