Hi. New to the forum and looking for advice from you guys really. Ive been Type 1 for 17/18 years now and need to start taking better care of my levels now with a young daughter.
I am now testing quite a few times a day and generally my levels are anywhere between 4 and 10 so not to bad, and i like them slightly higher due to the amount of sport i do, such as running and cycling.
The issue is that when i wake in morning my bloods were always above 18/19. I have now had to set an alarm for 3:30am to check bloods and take insulin to reduce levels, even after going to bed with levels between 6 and 8.
Why are the bloods spiking for no reason and what can i do about it as i don't really like waking up to inject during the middle of night.
Cheers

Morning and welcome @Foundazy

Brilliant news that you want to get better control, exercise is definately a big help. Can you explain what your basal routine is, so what insulin and when ? It sounds like your background is running out but need a few more details first ?

Hi, I've been a Type 1 for 33 years. There's a book called Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner which talks about glucose increases in the morning that seem unexplainable. It's referred to as the 'dawn phenomenon' and it's linked to the early hours of the day being a time when certain hormones affect the liver and increase its glucose output. Until I read it I thought my levemir injection was running out too quickly but this may partly explain what is happening. I'm using the freestyle Libre to test glucose levels and come the morning it gives a graph of what's been happening overnight. Starting at 6-8 before sleep it (usually) follows a slight rise then a dip then more or less flat until 0600-0630 it starts to rise quite sharply. Increasing the dose by 1-2 units has brought about a bigger dip and lower than I'd want but there is often still a rise early morning. In between that there are some spectacular highs that have kicked in soon after midnight which I can't really explain having reviewed food intake, dosage and glucose levels-but hey we're only human.....! Equally some days the results stay steady all night and no early morning increases.
This might go some way to explaining what results you are getting.

this also has been happening to me if I got up a little later in the morning. I think it was my Levimer running out. I am now on Toujeo and so far going quite well. I can get up an hour later and sugar still ok.
I also now have a Libre (1st week) been type 1 for 50yrs

I am injecting Levemer and novorapid, taking levemer in evening. i now take in evening as I originally thought that it might be due to it runningout during the early hours but now it cant be that as it is only been in system about 9ish hours. It just seems odd like last night for example i was 7.2 before bed, 6.1 at 01:30, 19.8 at 03:45 so took 16 units of Novorapid and fell back sleep. At 7:30 when tested pre breakfast i was 8.4 and been less then 9 all day since.
All help and comments and shared experience is greatly appreciated as surely i cant be the only one suffering like this
