Hi,
I had my first night time hypo at 4.30am on Mon morning. I was fully asleep and woke up with a 2.2 reading, shaking sweating, no strength in body, etc. Luckily i woke my husband and he jumped to blood monitoring, lucozade and sandwhich duty for me as I was quite out of it. The next night it happened again, but I was actually awake as it happend about 1am. I'd had a light carb snack before going to bed on both nights so was ok levels wise and did take my reading on the second night which was 8 before I went to bed.
I think my body's requriements at night had changed significantly, despite being on 14 insulatard for the past 2 months, it was suddenly making me hypo 1 or 2 hours after taking it as my readings seemed to be fine before bed and insulin.
So I've had 3 night time hypo's in a row. My husband was around for the first 2, but the 3rd happened when he was working away. So I went to bed prepared, had reduced my insulatard from 14 to 10 after speaking to my diabetic midwife and took bootles of lucozade and a ham sarnie to bed! I still had a hypo, but I remember taking my reading, drinking my bottle of lucozade and because when I have a hypo I am so weak I lie down and the next thing I know I woke up and took my reading again and realised 15 mins had passed. I'm pretty sure I passed out and lost conciousness, my reading 3.1 when I realised I was having a hypo, then 3.6 after downing a whole bottle of lucozade, then passed out and woke with a reading of 6.9. Yesterday was a blur coz my brain was still a bit fuzzed, but I'm certain I passed out and now it's worrying me as my husband goes away at least once a week and I am in the house with a 5 and 2 year old on my own. When I mentioned my concerns on night hypo's to my midwife she said I had good hypo awareness so she's sure I'll wake up each time!! That didnt fill me with confidence. Just takes once to not wake up to die surely. Any suggestions on what to do?
Yesterday I took my reading before bed and it was 4.6 which seemed low to me so I had 2 crumpets and some sushi, took my reading again and it went up to 4.8. I then went to bed and didnt take any insulatard as my reading would go up in time for the crumpet to get into my blood stream, but it still seemed too low to take insulatard, even just 6 units as it might have caused another hypo. I've tried contacting my midwife again as the insulatard at night was preventing too many hypo's during the day.
Such a palava, just when I've got it sussed, my body changes it's mind without warning and does something else which I have to work out how to correct. Being 24 weeks pregant, whenever no-one can give me answers on what is happenening and what I shold do, then go, well it's the hormone's. It seems like they are just trying to keep me alive until I'm full term so I can be induced and get the baby out safely.
