Oh Hell, Grannie.

How much can you cook and refreeze?
I would be a whirl of roasting and slow cooking and try and get everything portioned up and back in the freezer.

I agree with Brunnaria.. Salvage what you got. I wish I lived closer (West Country.) else I'd help you with them kippers...

That's a pity about the power cut. Is it possible to make some sort of "fish chowder" with the salmon & kipps?

How absolutely awful, That has really got to be every one with a big freezer's worst nightmare. I'm up here in Yorkshire and I wish I was closer so I could help in a more practical way. I agree with the others, cook what you can and then freeze again.

I'd have thought that most of the meat would be OK to cook and then freeze - a big freezer takes time to entirely defrost, so it can't have been completely defrosted for very long.

Hi, sorry to hear of your problems.
Although you can't get financial compensation for your spoilt food, you may be able to get compensation for the inconvenience. Look at this link

The freezer stuff I will cook and refreeze again so a bit of a chance but minimal I think. Think I might take a chance on the kippers as they are sealed in cooking/ microwave bags ( like cook in the bag) so they may be ok. No doubt I will find out!!

Funny thing is last night and tonight by the light of a candle I searched for food that didn't need cooking but was suitable for LCHF, last night found lettuce and salad bits plus a tin of tuna with mayo - so sorted. Tonight not quite so organised, half a manky pepper, a tomato that had split, a wilted lettuce, an avocado and mayo. I tried to keep the fridge door closed as long as poss so just grabbed what I could in about 5 seconds. Thank goodness it was too dark to see what I was eating.

If the kippers are "vacuume packed"? I don't see an issue. The pork &'beef cook it & see how long you can stretch it with the cold cuts?

It could be worth checking your household insurance cover, as some of the comprehensive cover ones have it wrapped up with everything else. It's only a phone call.

Hi, if you look at the link I sent, it says you can get £70 compensation for an electricity cut caused by bad weather blowing trees onto cables. The Electricity Companies have the cash put on one side for these situations, why not claim your £70?

I remember after the great storm in 1987 we lost 2 chest freezers full of food. My dad put in an insurance claim and it came to four figures just for the food.

There were some frozen lambs in there, mind (we had a small holding) but a lot of it was homemade and portioned stews, blocks of homemade stock, homemade ice cream, soft fruit, blanched veg, bread rolls, some fancy stuff from M&S, free range chickens - the loss adjuster was very supportive, and it was all about replacement value, from what I recall - parents did a lot of research into what it would cost to replace it all, and a value was agreed.

We had some amazing meals in those 2 weeks without power - we had an oil-fired Aga in a rural village with no gas - so we had a lot of neighbours turning up with all sorts of ingredients out of their unpowered fridges - and ours, of course - which were pooled, cooked and shared in our kitchen.

I was a kid so I admit I have memories of the exciting fun stuff rather than the gritty inconvenience, but I still remember it as a highlight of my childhood.
