First day here and confused already.....What is type 1.5??? :?:

Sorry but hey Hi all

My name is Carl 55 and new here hope to be back soon but off on hols tomorrow

Thanx

I've copied this from my reply to a previous post.
1.5 is an unofficial 'catchall' category which covers several different types of diabetes

1)perhaps most often on this forum, it refers to LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) which is officially type 1. It's a form that has a slower onset in adults than classic type 1 and is quite frequently misdiagnosed in the early stages as type 2 . As it becomes more understood, it is being realised that 10% or more of adults diagnosed with diabetes may have this form.

2) it's sometimes used for MODY (mature onset diabetes of the young) which is a relatively rare genetic form of diabetes. It's neither type 1 nor type 2 (and isn't always diagnosed in the young!)

3) Its sometimes used for double diabetes, people who have type 1 and then become insulin resistant or occasionally children who are diagnosed with both insulin dependency and resistance.

There are probably some other forms that are called 1.5, it really isn't a brilliant term as it can lead to confusion.

Oh and welcome

Thanx now really confused......lol

I started of (and probably still am) a Type 2 but now take 2 types of insulin and Metformin....

Hi CarlH and welcome. :)

There are lots of things to get your head round and it takes a while. Read as much as you can around the various threads and ask any questions as they arise.

Enjoy your holiday! :D

Is there a term for if someone is diagnosed as t1 and given t1 medication then it turns out they had t2 all along but are too far gone (apart from a mistake).

Type 2 I'd imagine? What adverse effects (other than weight gain and the risk of killing yourself by mistake!) does starting insulin treatment before you 'need' it have? Does it mean you produce less insulin yourself?

Well yeah, it actually happened to my mum and because I heard about the 1.5 i thought there might be something that's opposite. My mum still has to take insulin even after figuring this out because she can't do without it.

I know there are t2's that take insulin but my mum's considered and treated as a t1. Her sugar levels were always high even though she ate healthily and i think it was because of the insulin she didn't need and she would gain weight when normally she wouldn't have. I think her body has become dependant on the insulin now and basically made everything fast forward (illness and other diabetes symptoms). >.<

What makes her think she's not type 1 out of interest?

GPs are not always very useful for diabetes, I really want to know what the mis-diagnoses rate is, I saw an occupational health dr yesterday who was completely mystified as to why I was ever diagnosed as type 2 rather than type 1, she couldn't think of any reason at all that the 2 GPs I saw before had thought it was type 2!

I think she questioned it because her sugar levels were always far too high often for no reason and she was rushed into hospital too many times to count, her mum was t1 and she was diagnosed when she was pregnant I think and put on insulin from then on (gestational diabetes maybe???). I don't actually know that much because i'm not particularly close to my mum and only know this from what she's told me yonks ago...but anyway...
