Not Dawn Effect but Going to work effect?!!

Well I have been at this game for a year now. (my needle annversary was the 17th) Since having been on the DAFNE (or ALFFI as it is known here) my ratios have been more finely tuned etc. What I have discovered is that what I was assuming to be occasional dawn effect is more of a "stress from going to work effect" which is strange because I didn't realise my job stressed me that much!

On days when I go to work if I test when I get up my BS will be 6-8 ish, when I drive to work and get ready to go to the gym or sit down at my desk from breakie my readings will have gone up to 10-13! I don't eat during this time and I drive so it is not exercise enduced from lots of walking etc. Don't know how to stop this rocketing up - it is really annoying when I want to go to the gym and find I am too high when I was ok 1 hour before at home! :?

Any Ideas?? I have tried eating breakfast before I leave but as the insulin has not kicked in by the time I get there I am again too high to exercise.

Please help! I have no ideas left.

Hi Louise

So if you got up at the same time on a day off you wouldn’t have this effect?

I should imagine that it’s the driving to work that is causing the stress hit and causing your levels to climb if this isn’t happening on a day off…

If you hadn’t been driving to work, I would have suggested a small correction dose before you headed off, but the driving aspect would make this risky, as you would need to be pretty sure that the stress of driving was going to kick in to prevent a hypo happening…

You could try increasing your back ground insulin, but there again what is going to be the effect when you aren’t working would it cause a hypo?

If you’ve tried the breakfast and that hasn’t worked

Perhaps a small protein carb free snack before bedtime, similar to T2’s might help?

I see that you take metformin for insulin resistance, I wonder if you change the time/meal that you have this would it make the difference you looking for???

Hi

No on mornings when I work from home or at weekends I may go up a little (maybe 1 or 2) but never the big leaps that work causes.

I tried the protein idea before bed when I thought it was dawn effect - perhaps what I should try is having some when I get up. I shall give it a go and see.

Any other ideas?

what about having a snack instead of a full blown breakfast, that way you can get insulin into your system, and not risk a hypo whilst driving. if its only a small snack it shouldn't affect your BS too much, letting you go to the gym - just a thought.
