Hi

I have lupus and have been on steroids for about 5 years at high doses.

For a while I have been having excessive thirst, fatigue, blurred vision etc.

Then recently whilst an inpatient in hospital my blood sugar came back (from venous sample) 10.8

The doctors sent me home without mentioning it to me (!) but I picked it up and mentioned it to my GP who said it IS high.

However, I think if anything it is probably steroid induced.

I have bought a glucose monitor and my pre dinner measurement yesterday was 7.1
With 2 hours after dinner at 9.3

This morning though it was 4.9

Therefore I know that when I do the fasting blood sugar as suggested by GP I will come in 'within range' as it appears my sugars go up as the day goes on. . . . . .

I have also been told by specialists that in me the GTT test won't work due to the steroids.

However, I think that it is worrying to have hyperglycaemia for some of the day?

Do you think I should pursue this and try and get a diagnosis?

Do you think this would need 'treatment'?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Welcome to the forum Cathy,

Prolonged use of steroids can cause Type 2 diabetes and it would be worth discussing this with a specialist, an Endocrinologist, if you can get your doctor to refer you to one.

hya cathy and welcome,
as sue says..i would press to see an endo as they are the ones in the know :D
