Hi Lynda and welcome to the forum. Why did you fast for so long before the test? Only 10 hours is required if I remember correctly. This could skew your result a little. If your symptoms persist, I would recommend going back to the doc. Better to know what you are dealing with.

You didn't say which kind of test. It sure could affect the FPG. But I am unaware of studies that measured the difference, and based on my experience I think the change could go either way, depending on the individual. Certainly, the clinical standardisation of metabolic tests consists partly in everybody preparing for the test in a similar fashion, unless science is lucky to find a method for some test which is independent of the runup to the test -- the HbA1c being one such test. For the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, the standard fasting time is 8 hours. To lengthen the fast by a few hours wouldn't usually matter. But by 24 hours, who can say?

Intermittent fasting is a bit popular these days. If I were practicing that, my reason for get an FPG after a fast day would be to compare that circumstance to the standard.

Among diabetics, it's popular to believe that if you prolong a fast, say if you skip breakfast, the liver will release glucose and the blood level will rise. Not true for me. Once I unwillingly fasted 15 hours before an FPG, at a health fair. The result was 4.5 mmol/l, compared to the usual result of 4.7.
