Morning

I went to the Lab to get my blood tests done for my Hba1c, and a fasting test. I rang up the nurse at my local surgary to get my results and was told my hba1c was 6 and my fasting was also 6, then she said they dont know if im glucose impaired, or pre diabetic as i havent had a GTT done, told her i tried about 6 mths ago (have been "dianogised" about 7 mths) to get the test but the lab tech did a quick finger test and my blood sugar was 10.8, apprently that was to high to have the GTT done and i was sent away, my question is can you be diagnosed diabetic without having GTT done?

Hi Angela I personally was diagnosed on just two fasting tests (of 8.6 and 8.4) and never had a GTT test done. This was with a diabetologist. I was diagnosed diabetic in spite of an HbA1c of 5.8 at the time as the fasting tests took precedence.

I see you have been a member since December but you haven't been given the former Monitors' information for newly diagnosed diabetics. In case you haven't read it on other threads, here it is - I think the information will be useful and interesting to you.

Hi,

I was diagnosed purely on the basis of two fasting readings over 7 and was told this was standard practice in Scotland. Only after that did I get an HbA1c.

Me too - same as Dougie - also 1st HbA1c of 6.5. I asked for a GTT but was told 'no point - do it yourself if you want to' :!:

The lab refuse to do a GTT on me, as they said there was no point as my levels said I was diabetic.
