I use Novorapid and Levemir. If I had a big lunch and only had fruit for my evening meal do I still need to take my Novorapid? Most days I am toiling to eat 3 meals a day. I'm confused as to if I should follow a low carb diet or not. Only been doing injections for 4 weeks. Fed up already.

Hi @Strachan1
To clarify are you type1 or 2. Thread says type1, profile type2?

Hi @Strachan1 ,

I notice in you profile also you are prescribed metformin?
I read that this drug can act as an appetite suppressant. (Along with promoting insulin sensitivity & retard glycogen dump.)
On principle, one would need to bolus for the fruit....

Thank you for that information. Will check with Doc next appointment.

Please by all means bring this up with your doctor.. I would also suggest learning a little about carb counting with regards to insulin use.. (As a diabetic in general.)
It all sounds daunting, but you'll get the hang of it all & find a BS managment that works for you..

Just keep asking the questions.! :)

I would have to bolus for fruit. Take carbier the bigger the bolus. I would also add some fat to that fruit like cheese or nuts to slow the spik down

It is frustrating in the beginning no doubt. But if your general game plan is to have a big lunch and a fruit dinner you should be able to find out a general bolus through trial and error.

I do a vlc ( ultra) lc diet and do very well. I eat basically the same macros at each meal and know my dose. The amount of carb syou eat is up to you but IF you go keto you'll most likely need to bolus for half your protein as if it were carbs. I can't stand large meals. If I had a large lunch I probably couldn't put much on top of it for dinner. I like 4 small meals and small insulin doses.

Have you read the Bernstein Revolution. I follow his Laws of small numbers. Smaller low carb meals means smaller insulin doses means smaller room for error. Both high or low. If you want to low carb I recommend that. If you want more carbs than Think Like A Pancreas would be your book.

Impersonally couldn't eat carbs with out roller coastering not high and low.

Timing your bolus is a great tool. Many pre bolus before eating to CATCH the spike.

For me humalog takes about 20 minutes to start working so I wait 20 min before eating. If I want to come down a bit I wait 30. If I want to go up a bit I only wait 10-15. Matching your food to your insulin is key. You want them to get there at the same time. Not either before the other.

Hi @Strachan1
Sorry to have gone quiet. Others have now answered, I was going to say that if T2 I wasn't sure but as T1 yes bolus for fruit carbs but if really not hungry then basal should hold you steady without food.
