Hi everyone!

Well my husband was diagnosed with type 2 quiet a few years ago now but to be honest we have never taken it as seriously as we should have and more or less carried on as normal

He hates going to the doctors and the nurse talks to everyone like they are little naughty kids so I think It put him in a negative frame of mind from the word go!

Anyway, he has much more faith in listening to people who are actually going through it themselves and reads the forum :D

He has never had low blood sugar...it is ALWAYS too high!
He is on 2000mg Metaforim a day aswell as actos, ramiprill and simvastatin.

Here is the bit that confuses us both.......

When he first went to the doctors the nurse said "you need to try to take the metaforim 12 hours apart...morning and evening"
Well my husband is not a morning person and get's up between 10-11am and cannot stomache breakfast...but he stays up very late at night working on the pc.
Well because of the 12 hours apart thing the tablets have always been had 2 around midday and 2 late at night (midnight-ish) so never with food basically! :|

He has been back for another checkup and she has now said to him (after me mentioning the times of the metaformin) "well i would NEVER have said 12 hours apart...you should have them with food!"
So she suggested to have 1 (500mg) in the morning, 2 with tea and 1 at night (as he's up so late and sometimes has snack)

He also has now (this week) been given 80mg gliclazide as his bloods are up from last time...anyway he has been feeling unwell the last few days with stomache ache and headaches and also occassional dizziness with the new tablet (which he has had a tea-time) so after reading the forum he has decided to try it in the morning instead. His bood sugar yesterday dropped from 10 down to 6 within an hour after the gliclazide so it is working as he was always on 10-12 before!

I made a smoothie (orange juice, yoghurt, banana & strawberrys) so that it may hopefully be an alternative to breakfast (which he wont eat).
I am also going to try to get him to have a sandwich around lunchtime..then tea as normal.

I feel like a useless wife as I don't know what I'm doing
I am going to stay on the forum and learn more and help as much as I can to make him feel better...it's just so hard because he will go all day with no food then have a small tea and a piece of toast if he feels 'yucky' (his words! lol)

So....any help/advice about when in the day to take the meds and if the smoothis is ok for breakfast would be great thanks :D

Summary:
Get's up 10-11am, bed 2-4am!!! Struggles breakfast (smoothie ok), I will force feed lunch if needed, tea ok....
Meds:
2000mg Metaformin
80mg Gliclazide
30mg Actos (Pioglitazone?)
10mg Ramipril
10 mg Simvastatin

ps, I did mention maybe splitting the new 80mg gliclazide tab in half incase it helped the way he feels but he has only just gon on it this week and didn't know if it's something he will just get used to?

Hello and welcome! You do sound a wonderful caring and thoughtful lady and wife.... You are doing you're best given the circumstances.... Is your hubby a worrier? with the late nights and keeping busy? or is it just habit, his usual style n way? Please dont worry over him not eating too much at the minute as you "may" find the gliclazide will make him want to nibble more as it kicks in? the headaches and tiredness etc keep an eye on him n if get worse ? think of suggesting to return to your gp and discuss it. Feel free to talk away to all of us, we are here for the 'both' of you.... Anna.

me again! sorry but forgot to mention when making the smoothies with blender? it can make loads of 'air' in the mixture and cause gripey tummy? Also the fact he likes bland food like toast n lack of appeptite could be that he feels nauseauos with meds? Read up on side effects with drugs in packaging. I myself was on gliclazide n felt bit headachey to start with, then it gradually settled down. plus if he isnt eating enough he will feel bit lightheaded n yucky. The gliclazide when kicks in does stimulate the appeptite. Anna.

Hi bananadog and welcome to the forum :) You seem to be doing well looking after your husband in spite of the fact he's not making it easy. The Metformin could well be giving him stomach ache. He should take it when he eats even if it isn't exactly 12 hours between doses. Just do the best you can. To help lower his blood levels he needs to reduce the carbs he eats so should cut right down on bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, starchy root veg and flour based products as these will convert to glucose and raise his blood levels. Bananas are also not very good for him.

Is there any possibility that he could find another nurse. This one doesn't sound very professional at all.

Have a look at the Greetings and Introductions forum if you haven't already looked as you will find some useful information in there.

Don't hesitate to ask as many questions as you like - there is always someone who can help.

Thanks for the welcome Anna :)

He isn't a worrier and his late nights seem to be more habit than anything else...he has always had night jobs etc and finds it easier to work when the kids and loonatic dogs are in bed so that the house is quiet
It's funny because I can't stay awake after midnight anymore but can zoom around in the morning and he's a night owl who can get a million things done after midnight!

I did make the smoothie in the smoothie maker but it is the first time for ages I have done it so I think it must be the meds giving him a bad tummy as he's had that from the day he started them.
I think he needs to eat little bits more often so I'm going to go make some healthy snacks to pop in the fridge...I think when things are ready to grab it's always easier as going into the kitchen (especially if the kids have just been through it like a whirlwind and trashed the place) can put you off bothering!

I'm glad the side effects settled down for you, hopefully the same will happen here :)

He has got another appointment for a blood test in 3 months so hopefully his tummy and head will settle before then. I just worry because I sometimes feel like I'm not making enough effort...well it's all going to change now!

Thanks Daisy :)

I did suggest another doctors but he said "oh no...they'll start it all again with the poking and prodding!" ( men! )
I think cutting down the carbs is deffo a good way to go for him and I will deffinatly give that a try thanks :D
Will also mooch off and mingle in the other area you said and see if I can pick up some more tips...

thanks so much everyone xxx
