Hi, I recently was changed insulin to a long acting insulin to take at bedtime and novo rapid to take at meals. I will speak to diabetes team just wondering does anyone take this outwith main meals. For example if eating sandwiches and crisps

NovoRapid is a common fast acting insulin used by many people with Type 1 diabetes.
When we are carb counting, the usual advice is that we can eat up to 15g carbs without fast acting insulin. This is a small bag of crisps but less than a sandwich.

However, the advice may be different for type 2 or if not carb counting. I recommending asking your DSN,

It depends on what you eat and how many carbs, like In Response wrote. But your diabetes team should tell you how many units to use before what meal. You should be able to contact them and get a clear answer before you start using insulin.

We are not allowed to give medical advice on this forum however a basal-bolus regime for T2DM (which you are on) is generally revolved around a long-acting insulin (tresiba, lantus, toujeo etc) given at a time of your choosing and rapid-acting insulin (novorapid, fiasp etc) given with breakfast, lunch and evening meal.

This can differ for patients with different types of diabetes

I am on Nova rapid at meal times and Treseba at night, I have bloods today so am dreading the results as not watched what i have eaten ,time to get back onto the diet me thinks

Hi, welcome ab

Your novorapid has one purpose in life, to quickly reduce the effects of what you eat or drink, so if your blood sugar rises beyond what you want it to be, after you have eaten, then you should inject the novo, the trick is working out how much and when, (20mins before food for me) finding out when is the right time for you, takes time and should not be rushed to avoid hypos. No one can tell you the answer as its different for everyone.

For me, eating sandwich and crisps would spike me badly because it’s very high in carbohydrates so I would absolutely need my Novo, I try to keep my carbs down and therefore my insulin down, stick around and have a read of the forum, lots of useful information here, good luck.

I’m on novo rapid and have been for years , if I eat carbs I take it , depending on carbs I eat depends on when , ( 20 mins before 10 mins after , 2 hours after etc ) its taken a while of experimentation, mistakes and successes to get to somewhere I think I’ve got it it sussed, however like everything with diabetes things can change and do regularly, I ‘ ve always been a great believer in tryping to work out what works for me , as after all I live with diabetes all the time and what works for me worksite for me and me alone , as a rule which I was told when I first started on the Bolus / Basel regime , eat carbs ,take blood, sugar take fast acting to keep blood sugar within range.

I am on Nova Rapid 4 times a day and yet my 3 monthly readings are high. bloods just been done and it read 80 so has gone up since being on Insulin I am to see the Nurse Thursday so see what she says ...

@Patsy B don't beat yourself up about the past: focus on the present and future.
If your levels are high with insulin, that suggests to me that your dose is too low. Do you change your dose depending upon what you eat? If not, I suggest asking your nurse about how to adjust your dose.
