My partner has been type 1 diabetic for about 20 years, she was precribed the Novorapid pen refills about 9 months ago but we have noticed that for some reason it doesn't seem as affective as the usual Novorapid Flexpen shes always used?

An example was her levels being 16 and after 9 units it didn't change after 30 minutes, she took 6 units of her Flexpen and within 15 minutes it was dropping, this is just one of many instances of this happening, she has also allowed plenty of time for the refill pen to work but it just doesn't seem to work as well and seems to take far longer to kick in?

We also understand the dosage side of the refill pen so its not wrong dosage being given.

Anyone else had this issue with the refills?

Thanks

Unless the mechanism in the reusable pens is not working as it should be, cartridges in reusable pens should work exactly the same as flexpens, as it is exactly the same insulin, same dosing units, same needles - its just a metal pen instead of one-use plastic

You can test how much its given by shooting a unit into the outer cover from one of the needles - they are a specific size so you should be able to measure/compare with them

The cartridges are stored correctly and as this has been an ongoing issue since she first started using them, we cannot understand why it doesn't work like the Flexpen?

She often squirts some out to make sure its working and it always seems to release the insulin? I will get her to test the amout released when she gets some more Flexpens.

She mentioned all this to the Diabetic nurse who also said they are exactly the same, sadly we disagree as something just doesn't add up?

She also wrang her docs to request to be placed back on the Flexpen permanently and the receptionist mentioned shes had other people switching back to the Flexpen?

Strange?

Thanks for the replies

I understand your point but as this has been happening since she first got the refills I would find it strange if they had been stored incorrectly everytime? If its a bad batch, that would cause issues for that period wereas this has been going on since she got placed onto them, about 9 months now?

Thanks for the reply

Hi,

Try shooting 20 units into the needle cover to test the pen is dosing correctly? (after an airshot to prime the needle.)
It’s hard to spot but the 20u measurement should come upto the red line illustrated on this picture..

Good morning
I have just wandered into this thread and a thought has struck me......

I'm old school and remember the days of drawing your own insulin with a glass syringe.

There was always a big thing about shaking the vial.

Does anyone do this and do we need to??

Just a thought....

Tony

some insulins (cloudy) still require this. novarapid doesn't.

might be worth asking to try swap to Fiasp
